So my birthday is at the end of January.. still a little ways away but Im starting to think about what Id like to do now because.. well, I love party planning! Also, for my birthday I will be in Mexico with hubby and a couple friends so I'd like to have a birthday party with all my friends before we leave for Mexico, as I wont get a chance to see anyone on my actual birthday.

Since, my birthday is in the winter, I miss out on doing the pool parties etc. So what I was thinking was having something like a winter cocktail party. I have SOME ideas as to what kind of desserts and drinks to have but I can't afford to buy all the drinks for everyone since alot of cocktails include many different types of liquor. There will probably be 15-20 people invited. Im just not sure how to make it a "winter" party. Aside from a couple decorations and winter desserts, what else can I do?

At most of our parties (for any occasion) our group of friends usually plays some drinking games.. we stick to the usual ones that work for us.

The other thing is, I dont have alot of money to provide for this party. I can afford some decorations, some desserts, a few munchies and maybe a bottle of Bailey's for hot chocolate. I think it would be fun to have a kid like sledding party outside.. a snowman building contest or something like that but it's not guaranteed to snow.. so I can't really plan that this far ahead.

Im stuck for ideas...

Have a winter beach bash, since you'll be going to Mexico, it would be a great pre-party. Pull out some beach towels to decorate. Make frozen drinks with little umbrellas as garnish. Listen to beach music. Have everyone dress in appropriate beach attire. If you have anything that you use outside such as an umbrella or lawn chairs, bring those in as well.

You can do one "signature" cocktail -- which is great for beachy-themes anyway. Pick your favorite (or make up a new one).

You could also combine two themes--Canada & Mexico into something like "Snow on the Beach" (Baileys in hot chocolate or coffee with whipped cream would work for that or even a "dirty mother" or white russian.) or "Winter Heat" with something like a cinnamon schnapps drink. Or a Frosty Bikini (anything frozen or on the rocks--something like a cosmopolitan would work for that).

Just think of beachy names & put them to work in your food & drinks--Lifeguard, waves, surf, seashells, starfish, boogie board, flippers, fish, coral, sand, sun, and so on.

You shouldn't have to spend a lot on decor, either--borrow beach towels--chloe's right they are great decor!, pick up some things at a dollar store. Plastic glasses you can write guests names on & your birthday or the party date make good party favors. If you can draw, add some seashells or something. You could do the same kind of thing with mugs if you choose a hot drink. (And, for a stirrer, you can stick in a cinnamon stick or make plastic spoons dipped in chocolate which are really cute, and inexpensive.) Flip flops are another great favor--you can maybe get them at the $1 stores.

Chloe's idea of bringing in lawn furniture is great, too -- instant decor!

And, since you like the idea of being outside, if you can get everyone to wear swimsuits (maybe under their clothes?)you can do tons of fun games--even a snowman building contest--jazzed up by the fact that everyone is in swimsuits! It would make for great pictures, too!

Have fun!

Those are some great Ideas! Also, if you are low on cash, instead of having your friend get you presents have everyone make an hors d'vour and bring a bottle of their liking. That way you will have plenty of food and drink. You can just purchase the soda or whatever else you use as a mixer. My friends do this all the time, bing a dish and your own bottle.

If you do end up doing a beach theme, you can make cheap decorations using gift boxes left over from the holidays. cut them in the shape of street signs and write on them "To The Beach" "Boat Launch" "Sailor's Club" etc. Hang them around the house.

I use a site called invite.evumeet.com.
You create a home page for your on-line invitation and then you can send invites by e-card to all your guests. Your guests will be able to reply/rsvp on-line and interact depending how you have set-up your invite home page. You can add forums, polls, pictures, check list and even a gift list. It's a lot of fun and you might be able to get some good ideas coming in from your guests.

Wow, just found these suggestions - I can't wait to hear how it goes!

My birthday's in August, but that's Winter in New Zealand - so I might be using some of these ideas then!
