I would wait until the tank finishes it's cycle before adding Rusty. Betta do not do well in cycling tanks.

Corys are really great fish with betta and they do a great job cleaning up the bottom of the tank. They like to be in groups so if you decide to get them, try a group of at least 3. There are dwarf corys..if you get those you may be able to have a larger group of them.

Otos are also a good fish to add in a betta tank if you have some live plants or driftwood in the tank for them.

I've got a problem with algae, I do a partial water change every second day but this brown algae just won't go away. I've cleaned the whole tank out, remove and cleaned the rocks, the walls the heater and the filter but within a few hours it's back. I'm not sure what I should do I don't want Ren to get sick and I'm not sure how to get this terrible algae out. Please help.

Well, it's been a week and no one has ventured a guess at yours so I guess I will try...

Do you leave a light on above his tank all the time? This will encourage algae growth, but it shouldn't be a major problem. How often do you change the water? I've had some small patches of algae in my tank, and quite a bit on the decoration (which, by the way, I DROPPED the other day and broke ) but I've always been able to clean it off quite easily with a scrubbing pad. Ask you pet store and see what they say...just be careful about adding chemicals to the water, they'll probably just try to sell you stuff...

Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

I've cut down the time the light is on and the algae seems to have stopped growing, I do a partial water change every second day. I cleaned the tank out again yesterday and I'll have to see if the algae returns now that I have cut the lighting time down. MY fish Ren looks happy enough although he doesn't like me using cleaning pads in his tank he attacks them.

You might try to do a good gravel vac as well.

Oz- does your tank sit in direct sunlight? My cichlid tank gets direct sunlight and gets algae down on the bottom along the edges between the crushed coral and the glass. It is annoying, but there is nothing you can really do but crub it away.

Rusty is such a goof! I changed his water on saturday afternoon. He was very happy to have nice clean water! (Although I never let his water get dirty anyway, water changes every 1-2 weeks) Well, apparently he was extremely happy because sunday when I went to feed him my boyfriend asked what was in the corner of his tank. It was a bubble nest!!!! My little baby is all grow up
LOL. I am thinking about getting a pretty female for him to mate with. I have been doing a lot of research on this topic, so I hope I am prepared! Love is in the air!!!!

I did a half tank water change, pulled out his pebbles and gave them a good scrub and cleaned the glass two days ago and so far the algae has not reuruned. I have also cut down the time his light is on although he keeps coming to me wanting me to turn it on so he can see what's going on. So hopefully I will be albe to control the problem better now. I think I had the light on for too long, so instead of making him go to bed at 8.30 he's now going at 6.30. :-)

LOL, I bet he does not like that, early bed time stinks!!!!!! Rusty does not have a light, but I am hoping to get him one soon.

He added to his nest, it is even bigger now. Should I leave it alone? He won't be getting a friend for a few weeks, until I get another tank.
