I'm sorry to hear about your Sweetie. It's hard to watch them fighting so hard, knowing there isn't much you can do for them.

I am sorry to hear about both of your losses.

Rusty seems to be doing well. He still swims up to the front of the tank and waves hello and blows kisses, it is very sweet. He was mad at me yesterday though because he knows when I feed the cichlids he eats as well. But I fed him about half an hour before the cichlids because they were misbehaving so I turned out the light until they settled down and started behaving. When I finally fed them, he was mad because he wanted food too! The pig had just eaten but he was acting really mad that I didn't feed him as well, so I gave him a little treat to make him happy. He is SO spoiled!

My new fish Ren is going really well he's such fun to watch. he likes squeezing between the filter hose and the glass and then coming to me so I can tell him how smart he is. The only thing I'm concerned about is he always seem hungry. I don't wnat to over feed him and kill him so I'm wondering how many times and how much I should give him in a day. Those pelletts are so uneven in size it's hard to judge. Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks

So my birthday was yesterday, and my sister and her best friend managed to smuggle some new fish into my room.
I now have 4 neon tetras, 2 glowlight tetras, 2 glass fish and 1 mystery snail. I'm quite taken by them all, and I think I may have to pick up a couple more glowlights, they're so pretty! I've tried taking pictures of my tank to show you guys, but I keep getting really blurred shots. My sister told me to wait a month or so before adding new guys, so I will be on the look out for a cute betta around then.
What else would you guys suggest adding later on?
I'm thinking about fancy guppies but I don't want to leave them as my only option. hehe

Hey guys! Sooo, got a couple questions here. I was gone for a few days, and I asked my roommate to feed my four bettas, two males and two females. I explained more than once that the mailes get 4-6 per day and females a little less than that.

Well, got home this morning and the females look bloated and the bottom of the males tanks were filled with enlarged pellets that they hadn't eaten. I asked her about it when we spoke this afternoon, and she said she was in a hurry and "sprinkled" some pellets in. Seems that for some reason people can't get over the fact bettas don't eat like goldfish, etc. Sprinkled must have meant at least 30 pellets each, because there were at least 20 at the bottom of Willy's tank.

I cleaned out all the tanks, and the boys are acting fine and the girls bellys are a little bloated. I had my first betta, Gavin, die shortly after my mother overfed him (and I also gave her directions, no one listens).

Any idea what to do next? I was just going to not feed them for a couple of days ... good idea?

Hah, wow that's crazy. What about the boys? Their bellies aren't swollen but I'm sure they had their fair share of food too.

I am curious about something. Rusty's fins frayed a bit a few weeks ago. He seems to be somewhat alright, but not truly himself. I have medicine for my cichlids that says it helps with fin rot. I can't remember if it is the melafix or the pimafin. Can I add a little of this to Rusty's tank, or should I avoid that. Also, if I do, should I add a filter? I want to add one anyway because I want to add some neon tetras.

A few other questions- I am thinking about upgrading to a 10 gallon tank. I want Rusty and his soon-to-be new friends to have more room. I hope he likes them and they get along
1-Should I add Rusty first after I cycle the tank, and then the tetras after a few weeks when he has gotten used to his new home? There is going to be a few caves and plants in there.
2-Should I add a filter to Rusty's 5 gallon tank first to get him used to it, or will he adjust fine w/ going from a tank w/ no filter to a tank w/ a filter? I am going to get 2 filters anyway because the five gallon tank is going to be my baby tank if my cichlids have babies (I am going to try to breed either yellow labs or venestus') and I want to have it available to use the sick tank also. I don't want any diseases spreading through my tanks
3-What other fish can I add besides neon tetras? I originally wanted painted glass fish, but I was told by a few people that they are not compatible, I forget exactly why.

Thank you everyone for your help in advance, Rusty and I appriciate it!

hi Bettagirl, right now I have neon tetras and glo light tetras, and they all get along fine, my sister told me they would be fine to add with a betta, and the two kinds of tetras even school in one big group sometimes.

glass fish are really pretty, but I have heard nothing but bad things about the Painted glass fish. If i find the article i read on it awhile ago, I'll link to it for you. I was told that painted glass fish are also *very* susceptible to disease, because of the injections. a girl at petsmart also told my sister that glass fish are pretty prone to catching things too.
there's my two cents for the day
hope this helps!!

Thanks for the adice! Knowing that I will most likely stay away from painted glass fish.

Rusty is still being his normal goofy self. He always seems to want attention.
