Hey Everyone! I am new to the forums, but I am seeking information on keeping my body together...
I am a young student/working, and I am trying to find, vitamins that I can take to orally supplement my diet. I have used Centrum and Megawoman, but I am seeking something more holistic, without the extra additives...Do you recommend purchasing each vitamin separately? Vitamin E, A, B or does anyone know particularly of any good multivitamins?
Any help would be appreciated.

please do not supplement individually unless recommended to do so by a naturopath or nutritionist. By supplement indidvidually you can throw off your entire system or with certain vitamins such as Vitamin a it can be toxic in large amounts.

I don't know where your located but where I am I have a few health stores that have knowledgeable staff that help me with my vitamin needs.

Or even a naturopathic school, they normally have student clinics at really low prices.

My daughter is 21 and a stressed out student who also plays a college sport. She's found that taking vitamin supplements help with the stress and keep her skin clear and energy up. she takes a whole foods multivitamin, zinc, vitamin e, glucosomine, Vitamin c and a vitamin B supplement for stress. She's been given a good regimen from an acupuncturist who advised her on vitamins, plus she and I did a lot of research.

She has energy and is never sick at all, even tho others around her constantly have colds, sore throats and other illnesses.

You should do some research on the different vitamins or go to a wellness clinic for advice so you don't overdose as Anastasia mentioned.

I think tho that the average young student's diet is terribly lacking in basic nutrition if my daughter's friends are any guide. these girls play sports and still eat fast food, etc. My daughter is good-naturedly teased about her "healthy food" and bringing her vitamins along with her on road trips.

Along with looking for a magic pill in the form of a vitamin, you should make sure you're eating properly to give your body the nutrition it needs from food.

Multivitamin
There's also a good deal of research that supports the idea of taking a multivitamin/mineral supplement every day.In a yearlong study of 100 elderly Canadians, for example, Dr.Chandra gave half of the group daily multivitamin/mineral supplements with extra vitamin E and beta-carotene.The other half simply received placebos each day. At the end of the study, Dr Chandra found that the group taking supplements had half as many colds, flus, and other infection related illness as the group taking placebos. And when they did get sick, those taking supplements recovered in half the time on average.
Researchers used skin test to measure immune responses to proteins from bacteria and fungi that cause tuberculosis, diphtheria, tetanus and other ailments. After one year, the supplement takers in the study had significantly more virile immune systems than did the people who took placebos for the same amount of time.

Sounds like you just have some bad habits. It is possible tho to break bad habits and replace them with good habits.

buy some good multivitamins and put them on the counter so you'll have one with your breakfast. For health and metabolism, it's better to eat 5 small meals than to eat one or two big ones and skip the rest.

If you want to have a balanced diet, just do it! As the commercial says. Buy healthy food, pack your lunch to take with you, along with a healthy snack for the morning and afternoon. Then you won't overeat at dinner.

Maybe your body is ok with what you are doing now because you're young but it won't always be so. If you don't live and eat healthy when you're young, the supposedly "age-related" diseases like high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer all start t make an appearance. People think these are a natural part of gettting older but they are a result of lifestyle choices-choices which you are making now!

Hi,

School is a stressful time, but you shouldn't substitute food with vitamins. That isn't going to be all that healthy for you either.

All in all, keep in mind that nutritional supplements are not food and do not take the place of real food. They only provide an additional boost to our current food choices and most importantly, listen to your body! You should definitely feel a significant difference in your health and energy within a short time with the right supplement.

THE best multi-vitamin that you could choose contains over 70 active ingredients including vitamins, minerals, Antioxidants, Bioflavonoids and Enzymes.

I provided you with the link below if you are interested in additonal information.

I really don't think you can generalize on what the best multi-vitamin is. That really depends on what your needs are and most often even if you take a multi it has to be in order to enhance a healthy eating life style not to replace it.

Amino acids are not really necessary in a multi if you eat meat (meat has all the amino acids) The only people who normally supplement with amino's are bodybuilders and athletes due to their higher protein requirements.

Also you have to be careful if you are taking any other supplements or prescriptions because there can be adverse side-effects.

Myself I take a multi along with a separate dose of Vitamin C and yet another separate of the Bcomplex (Never take a b vitamin separately unless advised to do so by a professional, it can throw your whole body out of whack)

The reason for me is that I smoke and that depletes both of those essential vitamins and the amount in a multi is not enough.

My advice go get a physical done to make sure everything is ok.

After that find a student naturopathic or homepathic clinic (great rates and their supervised)for their recommendations. Or even a holistic nutritionist.

Personally I don't like Centrum I prefer Quest and if I could afford it theres a brand called Genestra which is a liquid multi which is better absorbed by your body. But it all really depends in the health state you are in now and where you would like to be. There is no one multi for all because we all have different needs and lifestyles.

Hope this helps!

I agree with Sabri2007. There is nothing like eating foods with vitamins in them. I'm a college student as well and I know sometimes you need a quick fix of food (usually fast food and junk) to get through your day. There are hazard in taking too many vitamins so ask your doctor what will be good. Try to eat fruits and leafy veggies when you can.

I've taken vitamins when I felt that my diet was not healthy enough because of a busy schedule and the healthy diet made much more difference in the way I felt and my energy level.

The problem is that teens and fast/junk food go hand in hand, so a multi-vitamin may not be a bad idea, but I would hesitate to recommend taking individual vitamins to a young person without knowing what her diet and knowledge of nutrients. As good as vitamins are, there is such a thing as "too much". That being said, in addition to a multi (if that's the route you choose), if she doesn't eat much fish I would see that she got some kind of fish oil capsule.
