Sometimes we have to do what we have to do to get to a better place. What bothers me is when people rely on the government and don't ever work on getting better and getting out on their own. You could get your GED and then go to college. That sounds big right now, but you start one step at a time. It is possible and it is dang sure worth it for yourself and your child. You don't want to live off the government for your whole life. That is a poor life to live. There is so much more out there, and don't let anybody tell you that it isn't possible to get there. It's OK to stumble. That just means your human.

Oh! And Freebubbles, while I agree with what you're saying about the stay home with the kids and have benefits only -- not keen on people doing that on my tax dollars I work for either (or pounds in my case!)
I also did NOT like it when my colleague said basically "Why is O's mother at home, why is she not working? Does her husband not let her? I think she must be on a benefit, what a scrounger."
I'm sorry but [censored]-umptions! My other colleague who is a bit older and a LOT wiser said "Maybe she doesn't HAVE to work."
(You know,
maybe they have money from ANOTHER source.)
There's lots of reasons why she might not work, doesn't mean she is on a benefit! (Maybe hubby has a very well paying job!)
(Plus they only have one child.)

I leave the child-rearing to people who feel called to it. I've never felt that call.

Oh, you can definitely raise a child on government assistance, but not well. I come from a long line of 'white trash' and having kids to get welfare assistance is nothing new. You can trade your food stamps for beer and ciggies some place(though officially not)...sometimes you trade them to people for money, etc. It doesn't take much work to be a [censored] parent. And if you just breast feed your child much longer than normal, or give them minimal formula, or change diapers infrequently, you can make those government dollars stretch. It's why we have so many malnourished kids, sick kids, etc because their parents are more concerned about their own well being than their kids.

My part of the family wasn't on assistance, and as a matter of fact we took in a lot of foster kids who came from just those kinds of homes. I'm not against assistance as a concept, but I hate when it's abused.
