I've just posted a new article on the Budget Travel page,

Youth Hostels Are For Everyone.

Hope you agree with me! I've had some great experiences in hostels, ranging from the rustic to the luxurious.

I hope the spirit of hostelling will stay alive and well for many years to come.

Happy travels to you,

jill

Many years ago I spent 2 years living in Greece and traveled a lot. I spent lots of nights in hostels and found people of all ages there.

It was a great experience and a cheaper way to travel.

thanks for the interesting article! I agree they're for everyone - I stayed in hostels throughout my 40s and even met a man who was 80 traveling around the world!

Hostels are a fantastic way to meet fellow travellers, share tales and enjoy living -- whether young, old or somewhere in between! Just pack a pair of earplugs if you're a light sleeper and the experience will be grand.

So we are unanimous!

Megan, as for the earplugs... I hope I'm not the cause of others' needing to use them ;-)

Joan, Greece must have been a fantastic experience. It's on my wish list - so beautiful.

Scribetrotter, I must go have a look at your Women on the Road link - the title and description really appeal to me. Much as I love my family and friends, solo travel is like nothing else.

Cheers,

jill

Capital cities can be expensive places to find accommodation but everyone usually wants to visit them. Many do have Youth Hostels.

For example, there are actually some located in central London, fun and handy for all the sights, many are near stations too.

Ive also stayed in them in Belfast,Dublin and France - the YHA is a great info source and yes, many have family rooms now.
