Hi Rae and all,
I am new here and just finding my way around. I am so glad I found this forum tho, I reall don't know what to do and could use some expert advice.
I have read many questions regarding nose screw and some touch on my question but none hit it exactly, so here goes and please bear with me, I'll try to keep things consise.
I got my nose pierced in May and had a stainless steel 18g screw put in because I read on one site where they were the best way to go as they didn't fall out. I also wanted a screw because they originated in India, and I love all things Indian. The piercer at the shop agreed, so off I went.
I had absolutely no problems with healing, no pain, no swelling, nothing. Along about the middle of Sept, I decided to try to put a new screw in. It took a bit of work, but it went in. ...hmmm, that's what HE said, wink... Anyway, I bought some new 14K yellow gold screws and when I when to switch-OUCH! It was awful, I had to stop messing with it because I was getting a clear-pink tinged discharge and I knew then the piercing might not have been totally healed. Thankfully, I had a clear spacer that I put in until I could figure out what to do. The shop that did the work is several hours away and I didn't/don't have a clue where to go in my area, so I decided to try a bone in the nostril. I got it in with minimal pain. Now, here are my questions...I want to go back to a screw, but now I am afraid to take the bone out. Should changing/removing a bone hurt? Once it is totally healed, I would have thought I could change nose jewelry like I change earrings, no? I really don't like the bone because it is loose in the hole and doesn't stay close to my skin and I am constantly pushing it against my nose. I used the same gauge as my screw, so I don' think that is the issue. Also, one of the bones that came with is a larger gauge, than I currently have, what would happen it I tried to put that in? I'm thinking it might hold the bone closer to my nose. Does cartilage stretch at all once healed? Will it always hurt when I want to change jewelry?

Thank you so much. I'm sorry it was so long, I've been told to write a book. I think that was a polite way to tell me to shut up...
wink

HI there... Im not giving you advice.. because who am I to give it? I have no experience honestly but my own... which is limited as well... I think its all a matter of personal perference it seems. I had the bone to start out with. And I have to tell you .. in the short time I had it.. it was nothing but trouble
last weekend I went to get it changed to put the screw in.. although we had a bit of a issue with that because my nose area is so small on a whole its alot more comfortable and realistic.. the inside where I had some bumps forming from time to time have all gone.. the jewel sits better on my nose.. it does'nt hurt to take the bone out.. if you clean it first it will help loosen it up and just gentley take it out.. maybe you've already gone to get it out.. you might feel a little sting there... which is why I changed mine to the screw.. only because it was trying to grow over the little ball on the end.. crazy stuff this is.. anyway looks like Im as long winded as you..lol hopefully one of the moderators of the forum will be around soon to give you more advise

Hi Wanda,

Thank you for responding. I really appeciate hearing about your experience. How long did you have the bone in? I have tried to pull it out myself, but it kind of hurts, so I haven't tried anymore. So you went to a shop to have your bone changed to a screw? I guess I will do the same. I found a place in the phone book that is pretty close. Maybe I'll go there.
I was kind of hoping one of the moderators would answer some of my questions, I am disabled and it's not always easy to get out which is why I wanted to do it myself...

Thanks again!

If you have questions about Nose Piercings, there are several articles written just on this topic.

Nose Piercing - this article is an introduction to nose piercing. Types of nose piercings, placement, methods for piercing and jewelry choices are discussed.

Nose Piercing Aftercare and Healing - this is a follow-up article, focusing on healing and aftercare.

Nose Piercing FAQ - these are some of the most frequently asked questions about nose piercings.

She's also written an eBook on Nose Piercing which covers all three of the above topics and more.

HI MissKitty... I have'nt had my nose done too long... about a month or so.. but I was having issues as I said so I needed to do something about it other then just let it continue...I think your best bet would be to go and get someone to do it for you. Ive read that eventually (up to a year) in a link that Rae gave me that your jewellery will be easier to change as time goes on.. but for now I would have someone do it if you your finding it hard.. If your in no rush I would just make some plans to go see someone... I would honestly stick with the screw type ... thats just my personally opinion... as stuck as I was on the bone.. it just didnt make sense after the fact..lol.. good luck with the changing Im sure it will go "smoothly"

Hi Guys-

Thanks for the info- Jase, I had read all the great info that Rae posted and thanks for the links to everything. I went back thru what she wrote to see if I missed anything.
I went to a local tattoo/piercing shop. All I can say is EWWWWW! The shop I had my piercing done in, was immaculate and the piercing room looked like a Dr's office. This place was NASTY. She didn't even have any 14K screws, I was kind of glad she didn't because the place was so nasty. She did say to leave the bone in for a little longer and that it would be uncomfortable removing it because of the little ball on the inside.
I think I'll call the place where I had it done and ask them, I'm sure there is some place in the city I can go...Thanks so much!

the best advice in this case is go to your original piercer. I would have run far from that place just like you!

Tattoos in Illinois aren't regulated (yet, but will be 01-08) but our local health department has to certify any in our area. The place I go is clean.. and I mean CLEAN! I went to places where they would smoke and such in the place. That is definately not the kind of place I would go.

I'm online at a friend's house for about five minutes and then I've got to run out the door again. (yay, travel!)

Nose bones have to just be forced in and out due to the lack of removable backing/that larger back end they have. People either can stand the pain of it or not. I'm getting more and more folks writing to me with complaints about changing nose bones, so all I can say is more and more people don't seem to be happy with them.

Hi!

I'm new here ... I had my nostril pierced in March and I love it! But, I've had trouble finding the right jewelry for it. I started out with a custom bent fishtail that was just okay. The tail was too long and it flipped out of my nostril all the time. I went back to my piercer and he bent me a second modified "screw" out of a fishtail. This I like much better!! I have not been able to wear a pre-bent screw, they just don't fit right (tail flips out of my nose and they are a bear to get in and out!!!).

My jewel fell out of my custom-bent stud so I thought I'd try a nose bone. First of all, it hurt like h**l to get in and it bled a little on the inside. It is too long (7 mm) and I don't like how sharp it feels on the inside of my nasal passage. frown

I just ordered two fishtails with a bezel set jewel AND a push pin jeweled labret stud to try. I ordered the tool to bend the fishtail myself so I can match what my piercer already bent for me, too. If you want to check out the push pin labret, you can go to Painful Pleasures in their Labret section, it's a "Jeweled Labret" 18g.

Hope this helps!!

Bright Blessings,
Dana
