As many have stated recently, Halloween is upon us ! In that spirit (lol) does anyone have a good movie they would recommend for scares and chills? I am not into gore unless used for a reason. I love a movie that plays with the psyche and leaves things to one's imagination.

Some of my favorites:

Anything by Hitchcock (though not necessarily Halloween fare, other than perhaps Psycho)
Rosemary's Baby - very creepy and a wonderful performance by all involved
Duel - Steven Spielberg's first full length movie, I believe. Made for T.V. about a menacing, faceless driver. What a cat and mouse game!
Texas Chainsaw Massacre - the original (claustrophobic and not bloody! it's grainy texture is enough to leave behind the skeebee-geebies)
The Exorcist - enough said. Don't watch it alone, unless you want to hear things go "bump in the night" in your attic;
Halloween - the original - wow, scenes of dread during daylight !!!
Don't be Afraid of the Dark - A T.V. movie starring Kim Darby (?) about little creatures that come out of her fireplace
The Ring - I thought this movie was great- the video alone as presented in the film is worth it !!!

There are so many others out there, but this is just a start. I'd love to hear your thoughts and recommendations.

Forgot to mention "The Blair Witch Project".

I don't really watch scary movies anymore now that I'm old and weak-hearted, but loved to torture myself by watching them when I was as a kid. I'm sure you've seen it Terrence, but at the top of my list would be The Shining. The book is a classic too.

You know, if you want a great haunting film that can still give you goosebumps when you're alone in your room watching it late one night, go for "The Changeling." Classic!

Also, "The Duel" rocks as a movie. Yep, a first for a little director named Stevie, based on the short story by Richard Matheson. I love the ambiguity of evil!

"Wolf Creek" is hands down the scariest film I've ever seen - just terrifying and sadly, based on the true story of the backpacker murders by serial killer, Ivan Milat.
I think it's now available on DVD in Australia - not sure whether it got to the States.

How about Scream? I know it's a silly teen movie, but the original still scares me! What's your favorite scary movie, Sydney?

I also REALLY enjoy Johnny Depp's Sleepy Hollow. Except the part where he is chopping the tree and blood is spurting. That parts scares the HECK out of me! And it's so gory.

I also really liked "The Craft" - Fairuza Balk was really good as the evil Nancy.

Anyone remember "Phantasm?" I remember being really creeped out.

And of course - Amityville Horror. The original movie and the book. I still freak out if I wake up at 3:15am.

Phantasm scared me witless the first time I saw it - I was about 13, and I still remember it. And the original Amityville was awesome.

Deb, Wolf Creek did make it to Canada - someone I work with saw it at the movies last week, we talked about it yesterday.

I saw a movie called The Entity many years ago, that was just NASTY and really freaked me out.

I watched the Exorcism of Emily Rose a while back - really enjoyed it. But the ex was a total pussy arounf horro movies, so I haven't seen any for ages. I must catch up after I finish school.

Frieda.....yes! The Shining was awesome. Remember when the kid was riding his Big Wheel up and down the hotel corridors and the camera was following him? You'd hear no sound when he was on carpet and then a ton of sound when he was on hard wood floors. And you just never knew what he'd meet around the corner !

Phantasm was a lot of fun too.

I will definitely have to check out Wolf Creek. I KNOW I saw the Changeling.....but can't picture it....who was in it?

I don't go much for horror films, but I do love a little creepy suspense. Has anyone seen Secret Window? I figured it out rather early on and it still creeped me out. (But then, I'm kind of a pansy in that respect)
