I was chatting with one of my coworkers the other day. I can't remember what I was talking about, but she responded by saying, "see, you just really need kids." I reminded her that I don't want kids. She said that she didn't "get it." She told me, glowingly, that having kids is "so cool!" and that I just didn't understand how cool it is. "I mean, it's just, it's, well, it's SO COOL!" She couldn't even describe it any further than that.

I asked why she cared so much if I wanted kids or not. She said she didn't care, I could do whatever I want.

That's not how it sounded to me!

Hi lngilbert-

Wow, that is hilarious!! I guess she told you! I have a coworker who, upon hearing I wasn't planning on having children (after giving me the whole "But You would be such a GREAT mother speech) informed me that I am now a "TINK..Two Incomes, No Kids."

I really appreciate your sticking to your guns! How can having, raising, and DOING THE VERY BEST YOU CAN for your kids be simply COOL! Damn! Tell it like it is! It's the hardest, most taxing job you'll ever do in your life and the one you're likely to get any accolades for! Be sure of your motives when/if you set out to have kids! None of us will ever be prepared, educated, enlightened or COOL enough to have them! Ask me - I have 2 degrees and 4 kids and it's NEVER ENOUGH! Most times it's just DOING THE BEST YOU CAN...and if you're not prepared to invest that much - DON'T DO IT!

If you can't reasonably describe the experience, it aint COOL, lady.

Maybe in her case, misery loves company...

I have a daughter and I love her to bits but I don't make the assumption that everyone in the world is going to feel the same way about it.

How presumptious to say that too someone.

I am just the opposite. When I know someone who is thinking they want a child, I tell them to find someone who already has one and borrow that child for a week or at least a weekend before they get pregnant. I also point out that they are talking about a commitment that is going to last WAY beyond the 18th birthday. You can get tired of and divorce your spouse but not your kids.

I think, before she said how cool it is, I made a comment about how I don't have any money, how would I have a kid? And my coworker said that no one has enough money to have kids. Well, then don't have kids! Every parent says that, don't they? If you can't afford it, if it makes you live on credit, then DON'T HAVE KIDS! "Then no one would have kids." Tough.

The response I have gotten when I have said that we have no money to have children: "God will always find a way to provide for the child"....

Oh yeah, I forgot about this part. The coworker asked if my husband still wants kids, and I said I think so. Then I said, "don't you think though if one person doesn't want kids, it's better not to have the kids?" She just raised her eyebrows and was like, "whatever."

Grrr.
