This weeks article is about kids & makeup.
what age did you start wearing makeup, was it with permission or hidden.
Myself it was grade 8 graduation, i was fourteen. My younger sister on the other hand was 13 but also grade 8.
Is it just me or does it seem that society instead of focusing on building a young girls character, is more concerned about a young girl looking for her beauty from outside sources.
Now i now some can say that has always been due to the images that are portrayed in magazines, but before there were no products that were geared to this demographic.
Thoughts opinions?

My parents said i was going to have to wait until 16 but they let me start at 15. My mom was so happy that i kept to neutral muted colors and black mascara. my skin had a lot of marks so i was so happy to be able to wear concealer. i think when you feel confident on the outside you are able to be more confident on the inside.

Some little girls are naturally attracted to make up. I don't wear a lot of make up, just blush and eye liner normally. When my daughter was little, she was a girly girl, and loved having her nails done, and playing with make up and dress up. She is 15 now and wears a little makeup, sometimes I do stop her because she has laid on the eyeliner a little thick but usually she does ok on her own.

most definatley, i was one of them and theres nothing wrong with that,
I don't see the big deal with playing with makeup etc. etc. but it's more so when you go out and you see these beautiful young kids with eyeliner, eyeshadow. Why? It just seems that before a kid couldn't wait to grow up and now we are in a sense forcing them to grow up so soon.
And i agree with the confident on the outside, which is why i let my sister start earlier but it still coincided with puberty which is when our normal great complexion ends up turning [censored]!

I am really upset, and i'm glad i get a chance to vent about this topic. My 10yr old granddaughter lives with her father, hes in his late 60s, he lost custody of her when she was just 2yrs old because of sexual abuse now the courts give her back to him, He buys her make up, eye shadow, liner, lip stick, and mascara, He has colored her hair blond, she wears black boots with studs in them, and the shortest skirts and dresses, dangley ear rings. She in 4th grade what is wrong with the schools she goes there dressed like that. I have contacted social services, he tells me if i do that he won't let me see or talk to her, they live about an hour or so away from me.She said to me that her uncle, her fathers brother calls her a whore. but she won't tell on him because he sends her money. I told her hes not calling her a nice name and she shouldn't talk to him, she said she knows its not a nice name but if she don't talk to him he won't send her no more money or jewelry. I Believe hes talking dirty to her. I told her father but when he asked her she denied it. and of course the uncle also denied it.I talk to her by phone nearly every day. shes a sweet little girl. i wish she would open up and tell the truth to the people at social services. i want to get a tape recorder and get her to talk about stuff. my heart aches for her

If you suspect child/sexual abuse you have an obligation to your granddaughter to alert the proper authorities. I believe the clothing/makeup you have described, is entirely too adult like for someone her age. Furthermore, the father that allows her to dress that way, is making his daughter into his wife/girlfriend, than his daughter. That is a sure sign of sexual abuse. She is not given the opportunity to be a girl, she is thrust into the role of being a woman for the men in her life. Another point, her statement that she will not let anyone know that her uncle is calling her a whore, just because he sends her money for school, is equal to her uncle pimping her. She is actually selling her self respect for the money he sends her for what she thinks she needs. This issue needs to be addressed, IMMEDIATELY. Someone must intervene now, before your granddaughter gets older, and perceives this behavior/ideas as a way of life... Getting off my soapbox now...Sorry, I am a Social Worker, and I work with child/sexual abuse everyday, I know the signs...Someone need to look into this situation...Another thing, WHAT JUDGE IS RETURNING A CHILD TO A PERPETRATOR OF CHILD/SEXUAL ABUSE? Who abused your granddaughter? Her father? Where do you live?

I agree, someone does need to address this. Do you mind if I ask where her mother is? She truely needs the guidance of a female especially at her age and in this situation. I am glad that you talk to her every day, and I understand that you don't want to lose that contact, but she's only 10 and needs someone to help her. Let us know, ok.

Truly, excuse me I have reported this to child services and to the police dept. I sat in a room with her at the police station while they questioned her. Don't make it sound that me as her grandmother isn't doing any thing. during the questioning she refuses to tell on her abusers. unless there is physical injury they say it a he said she said among the adults. so before making me feel like im not there for her, get the facts straight. i said in my earlier post it has been reported even my psychiatrist called in a complaint to social services. children often protect there abuses my brother and i both protected our abuser also. I love my granddaughter and even filed for custody i have custody of her brother. don't make me look like i don't care i do very much.
