I had cataract surgery 22yrs ago at age 38. my cataracts were the results of high doses, and of regular doseing of Prednisone for treatment of my asthma.
Cataracts produce a progressive, painless loss of vision. Their cause usually isn't known, Although they sometime result from exposure to X-RAYS(such as high-dose radiotherapy to the eye) or strong sunlight, inflammatory eye disease, certain drugs (such as in my case Corticosteroids) or complications of other disease such as Diabetes,They're more common in older people; babies can be born with cataracts(congenital cataracts)

Hey Rosie - It looks like I might be suffering from the same issue at 48. I heard from a relative last year that my Mom had cataracts in the last few years and surgery/

Do you wear glasses or contacts after the surgery or no need? I do not have vision insurance. This last round of prednisone for my eczema seemed to really affect my vision. It took a nosedive and my glasses no longer work. I got them about 3-4 years ago and first time ever had to.

My kids needed an eye exam so I had one too to show them how easy it was and know a bit about the process before they did. The nurse scared me into thinking I had glaucoma since I had to take some test for it, but turned out not to.

I read and printed document from mayoclinic yesterday that explained the test and how should not drive home and then the surgery seems quick and back to normal next day. I am scared of the thought of surgery on eyes.

Bonnie, I wear prescription reading glasses, I'm glad for you that your test came back not to have glaucoma, I do as a result of the steriods
It's also important to be checked for Osteoporosis which I have from the use of Prednisone, I have fractured 2 bones. Prednisone can be a life saver but it comes with soooo many unwanted side effects. ya i am lucky to have a great health insurance (medicade) covers every thing.
When i had cataracts i could not see any thing but a shadow, no one had a face ;(
Are there any programs where you live that can help you, When my insurance stoped covering glasses my eye doctor wrote out something so i could get free glasses. Check around for public asst. Medcaide covers everything once again.
Good luck to you and your family
