Whats the story with elderly Australian (& other nationalities)men marrying Thai and other Asian teenagers/young women - I just returned from Thailand and although I know it happens and has been happening for some time - I found it quite disturbing the number of elderly men walking around with teenage Thai girls - kissing and holding hands. I met one couple - the man a 75 year old Australian and the girl - 19 years old! I found the whole thing exploitative - he of her and her of him.
They also told me they were planning a family!
Do men really believe these girls love them? Surely these girls don't stay with these men long term?
Am I going mad - does anyone else find this distasteful?

I have seen things like that as well. I find it completely disgusting. I also find it even more evidence that men are indeed the inferior sex, they do honestly think these women love them. Denial is not a river in Egypt.

There was a case in Texas where an older man had a couple wives, killed the Asian younger woman after abusing her.

I think these men choose these women because they are compliant. These women are looking for a better life, often send money home to a very poor family AND put up with terrible abuse at the hands of their husband.

I guess those would be good reasons as to why it was big headlines when an 82 year old woman married a 24 year old man...

You often see younger women with older men - I've heard it said that men are attracted to what they see while women are attracted to what they hear - also, some women definitely target older men looking for financial security. But it was the extreme examples I saw in Thailand that shocked me...its such an unusual sight in everyday life in Australia to see an elderly man kissing/fondling a 19 year old girl. You hear of the odd extreme example with the very wealthy like Anna Nicole Smith and aging actors and musicians - Billy Joel's new wife is about 23 - think he's pushing 60 - I heard him say that age is irrelevant, that he would love his new wife regardless of her age - interesting though that I've never heard of him dating a 60 year old or even a 40 year old!
The men I saw in Thailand were not wealthy men by any means - the couple I met that are planning to marry and start a family - he is a retired plumber, divorced, grown up family and lives in an apartment in suburban Melbourne. But I guess if you're from a very poor family with no prospects - he could be the answer to all your prayers. Once she marries him and settles in Australia - she could leave him and find a reasonable job as her English was very good and she'd get a nice nest egg to start her new life after the divorce settlement. By the way - the mans grown up kids are decidedly unhappy about the relationship - surprise, surprise..you're right Lisa - there goes the inheritance or a large slab of it anyway.
Interesting article Kevin - now that is unusual!
By the way I didn't see any elderly women wandering around with 19 year old boys in Thailand!

I can also see the other side of the coin - a timid Asian girl being mistreated by an older man - fearful to leave him or seek support in an unfamiliar country.
Bad news both ways....

Deb, when I said that about the inheritance, I was referring to the mention that was made of the younger man marrying the 82 year old woman in Argentina.

I think these young Asian women are looking for a way out of what must be a very hard life. Its a very sad situation.

In Austrailia, how long does a woman in this situation have to remain married to the man to get citizenship in OZ? Here in the states it could take up to 5 years.

In Australia its usually 2 years before you can apply for citizenship.
Five years would be a better test...it would be interesting to know how many of these sorts of marriages break up after 2 years?
The situation is more complicated if a child is born before the 2 year period as it immediately becomes an Australian citizen - I would imagine the mother could then make application to stay in Australia with her child even if the marriage is at an end.

Here in the states they call that an "anchor" child. Even if your the Parent of an American citizen that does not automatically mean you have the right to work. That is a big issue with the immigration struggles we are going through at the moment, its a big issue with the politicians.

There has been talking of women seeking asylum in churches, their children are American citizens but they are not. The churches feel they have the right to defy Federal Immigration and hide these people.

i know a man who basically has a "mail-order bride" from China. She can barely speak English, so she's having a hard time finding a job, and he's getting a little frustrated. The thing is, back in China she had credentials and made a lot of money, but the language barrier is too great here.

Also, she is about 20 years younger than him.

As far as the woman seeking asylum in churches - that happened here in Chicago. She made a huge deal about how she shouldn't be forced to leave her son, but she didn't want to take him with her. Honey, you were in this country for 16 years. During that time you didn't bother to a) gain citizenship or b) learn to speak English. I wouldn't care if she was Czech (my ancestry) I don't think it's right for her to be here! Although, she is gone now, but I think her son is still here.
