As anyone who has read my other posts knows, my poor little Alpha (the Betta fish I had) died last spring just as my winter semester was ending. He was with me for almost my whole first year at university.
Now that I'm back at school, and know I am going to be here next semester as well I've been thinking of getting a fish again. I priced out what it would cost me to get a nice 5 gallon tank, which would give a fish more room than the little Betta kit I had, and would also allow me to have a heater and filter if nessecary, so now what it come down to is the fish itself.
I don't have much money, so I'd like to avoid having to pay for a heater and filter if possible, so I was looking at once again getting a Betta because I know that they can go without. However I think it might have been the fluctuating temperatures in my residence last year that caused Alpha to get sick.
While looking online at beginner fish care sites I discovered the paradise fish. According to what I read (links are below), the paradise fish breathe the same way a betta does so it wouldn't need a filter so long as I kept the water clean, and unlike a Betta it can withstand colder temperatures and is not as picky about its food. So it seems to me that it might be a better idea as it would save me from having to get at heater at this point. Also I think you can put more than one in the same tank.
Does anyone know anything more about Paradise fish? Or have any ideas on this? Do you think I could use the same food that I had for my Betta?
Please offer any informative input.
Thanks
~Grace
