Hi, I just posted a new article The Budget Foodie's Tour to Buy Food in Bulk inspired by my own recent haul of some fantastic peaches and nectarines from 500 km away. Why not make shopping for the best food part of - the reason for - a great trip? I didn't put this in the article, but lots of us are worried that kids don't know or appreciate where food comes from. A visit to farming country is a great way to help them, and us, all understand more about farming and food production. Hurray for farmers! Happy Travels, jill

Great article Jill!
We often travel to farmer's markets and buy lots of fresh foods! Here in North TX in Weatherford they have a peach festival every year. this was our first year to go but it was terrific! It's so hard to get really good peaches in stores, in fact I don't even buy them in stores anymore.
The Weatherford peaches were delicious! I bought a huge box, plus we got great produce at their farmer's market too.
Here in TX lots of the little outlying towns have produce stands. I think you're right about kids needing to know where their food comes from. When we lived in Oregon, I had a dozen chickens and my nephews were fascinated with them and the eggs they laid.

Thanks Joan for that note.
It's a sad thing that recently our city passed a bylaw forbidding the keeping of chickens. I don't think anyone actually had a problem with chickens, it's not like anyone had them! The one person I knew who kept one chicken for eggs was so unobtrusive that it certainly wouldn't have bothered the neighbours.
On a happier note, the nectarines and peaches I bought were just delicious... yum yum ;-)
Thx again for your post,
jill

I loved my chickens! Of course, I did live in the country. They actually have different personalities!
yes, it's really too bad they needed to pass a law like that. I think even here in Arlington, which is a big city, we could have them if we wanted to.Some people have horses, cows and sheep so I'm sure few chickens would be ok too.
