Do you have a plant that he can rest near the surface? It might be easier for him to breathe

yes I do have a plant that is what he uses to rest near surface. I just wish I knew if there was a way to save him cause I have a feeling he is dying, but I don't want him to die. I know that's cheesy

Hhhmmmm....It's sounds like one of three things Logic...

Constipation...treated by fasting and pieces of cooked frozen pea, skin removed.

Dropsy...not much you can do, it's always been fatal with any of my fish who had it. If that's what it is he will swell up to the point where all his scales begin to pop out. They either go fast with that or linger for awhile but eventually sucumb.

Underdeveloped swim bladder caused by overfeeding as a fry...nothing you can do about this either, but it isn't painful, just sort of a handicap. If this is what it is you don't feed him too much at one time. 3 or 4 very small feedings a day so that the stomach doesn't bulge against the swim bladder and cause his balance to be even worse than usual.

Have you done any online research Logic ? If there is something else out there that can cause swim bladder issues I don't have any info on it. Those I mentioned are only the issues that I have had to deal with so I know something about them.

Try this site, maybe you can find something there to help...

All the best Logic..and sorry we don't seem to be helping much...

Just wanted to give ya'll an update on Rusty: he is doing well. He seems happy, and is constantly begging for food. Sometimes I think he is worse than my dog I am hoping to get him his friends within the next three weeks. My cichlid tank is being set up on the 13th (the day after my 21st bday!) and then I am adding fish a week later, so I am going to add some neon-tetras to Pig's tank the same day. I also am adding a small filter with in the next week or so, as well as gravel and grass!

Has anyone ever been to a place called "That Fish Place" ? It is kinda far from me, but I have heard great things about it. I am going there to get the stuff for my tank, as well as perhaps the fish from there, and was wondering if anyone had ever been there. I was hoping to go this sunday, but I am going to New York.

Will adding a filter stress him out? It is just the small aquaclear 5-20 gallon. I am hoping this cuts out on illness and dirtiness, not to mention water changes! I know I will still have to change his water, but at least now not as much.

If I were you, I would keep the new fish in a separate smaller tank for a little while, just to make sure Pig doesn't catch anything from them, especially since he's just getting over an illness. It's never a bad idea to quarantine new fish anyway. I can't give you much advice on filters though, I don't really have any experience with them (though I wish I did, I feel kinda bad leaving him in that little unfiltered tank...oh well, some day...)

Logic,

How's your guy doing today? Glitz was acting like that before I left on vacation, and I started Betta Fix with her, but alas, it didn't do any good. I have noticed if the water is cold -- mid 70s or so -- they are very lethargic. I hope your guy gets better!

Yeah, I think I will quarentine them. I have Squishy's original tank still, I am going to put them in there with some stress coat and some aquarium salt.

Hi again guys, just thought I'd give a little update My sister brought me some pellets that float so I have an easier time keeping track of them. He seems to be doing much better with those, and hopefully sometime within the next week I will here from the store I applied at for a job and I can get him a bigger tank and some different food! He is still really shy around me, but I blame the cats for that I was sitting at my computer today, and I glanced over at him without making much movement and he was swimming happily I must have sat there spying on him for 20 minutes. Lol. I turned back around to log on in here and tell you guys 'cause I was excited, well Eeyore jumped up and now he's back to hiding Aw well. At least I know that he is just shy I'm so happy!!!! He had opened his fins and was flowing so prettily Thanks for all your help guys I'll post more soon

Well, Rusty gave me a real scare last night. I went out with my boyfriend and when I came home he was laying on the bottom of the tank not moving at all, not even his little fins. I called to him and he did not move. I shook the tank a tiny bit and he started swimming. He swam up and greeted me as he usually does, but when he realized I was not going to feed him he went off to sulk. What a bugger! I am still conerned though. Some of his body area looks lighter, and it has never done this before. I also thought I noticed a slight bulge but I don't know, he wouldn't stay still for me. Figures! LOL. I know he was upset with me yesterday because he did not eat monday, but I fed him yesterday and he was happy before I left to go out. I think I may have possibly over-fed him What can I do to help him? Not feed him for a few days then try some frozen cooked peas? I hate the thought of not feeding him for a few days, but if it will help him then I will do it.
