Here's a great festival I just heard about for anyone living or visiting the Cowichan area on Vancouver Island this Fall:
The Salmon and Mushroom Festival (October 27-28, 2007) celebrates the perfection of wild edible treats in particular when served to compliment one another. Enjoy a fusion of flavour when you take your turn at sampling exquisite wild Salmon and Mushrooms treats, dished up to inspire. Beyond the aforementioned savoury experience, this event will showcase a number of other activities. Take the time to involve yourself in cooking demos, salmon barbeques (donated by the Dihtidat people), mushroom identification sessions, slide-shows and educational displays. If youre keen on wandering the woods, for a fee of $5 per person you can carpool and join the mushroom field trips to explore the Islands offerings with the help of Mycologist David Tamlin from the Vancouver Mycological Society and Ingeborg Woodsworth from the South Vancouver Island Mycological Society. Remember to dress for a forest field trip, bring a basket or open container plus paper bags, note paper, a knife and pencil. If youd rather stay on site, discover the all-day market offering local arts and crafts, baked goods, plants and nursery stock and of course, mushrooms! From 10 am to 4 pm both days at the Old Fire Hall on South Shore Road, in Lake Cowichan. Admission by donation.
