After crossing the calm plains, I go see the quick fmv and have the fight with Kimahri and his brothers, I go back to the plauins and CANNOT find a chobcobo ANYWHERE - including the southernmost pathway or northwest of the plains - why is this, and therefore cannot get to the temple to get the cloudy mirror.

Have you tried looking where you get the caladbolg, the station in the middle, to the immediate left of bridge exits?

I had to wait till I had finished everything but the final fights, and was picking up all the goodies.. then I found a guy with already trained chocobos right next to the shop in the middle of the calm lands. He's sitting ON his chocobo.

The trainer should be just south of the airship in the middle. you might feel like a jackass finding out it was just a few steps below the airship when you went around searching all over, i know i did <img src="/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
