The painting I'm thinking of is of a girl, in a dress laying in what I remember to be a wheatfield. Her back is to the viewer and there is a farm house in the distance ... I'm THINK the name was Amanda's Dream or Anna's Dream ... though I'm probably not even close.
Anyone know of this painting, and the name of the artist?

How old is the painting? Do you know whether the artist is American or European?

I think I know the painting you are talking about. It is called "Christina's World" by Andrew Wyeth. I remember really loving that painting as a girl because it seemed dramatic and it was very detailed.

The painting is "Christina's World" as Diana has already said. I love Wyeth's portrayal of her. We had quite a long discussion of this painting in one of my art appreciation classes and the teacher told us that Christinal was, I believe, the artist's daughter or the daughter of someone he knew and that she was crippled and the painting shows the world as she sees it. Does anyone know if this is correct, or did I forget what my instructor said?...it was so long ago.

It seems you are correct about some of the facts surrounding "Christina's World," Phyllis. Christina Olsen was the daughter of friends of the family. She was afflicted with a a crippling disease. The painting shows her making her way across the ground to reach the vegetable garden on the property. Although the painting is about Christina, Wyeth actually used his wife as a model.

I saw a show about that, apparently the house is still there and people go lay in the field to have their photo taken in that position ...

Diana, thanks for the update. I didn't remember that Wyeth used his wife as the model.
Lisa, isn't it rather odd that people would want to lay down in that field to have their picture taken? Different strokes for different folks, I guess.
