Thanks everyone for your support!
Here is the follow-up:

So following your advices I decided to make my appearance.
We were to meet at 7:30 at the rooftop of Bar #1 (of the 2 bars planned for the evening).
At 7:50, I called to advise I was on my way ( a 5min cab ride away).
Guess what?
As predicted, the place was beyond full -- in fact there was a huge line-up for the elevators! HAHAHA! So glad I took my time, as I knew this would happen.
Did I say anything?
Nope. Kept me mouth shut. Yup - and they had said of my prediction of a jammed-to-capacity place: "No way. Everyone will be gone by that time! We'll have the place to ourselves." ya. whatever.
Showed up at the Bar #2 (which, incidently, is the venue I will be at YET AGAIN tonight with my DH and friends for a pre-wedding thing) five minutes after their arrival with the wonderful greeting:
"Couldn't wait for you - we have a bunch of hungry ladies here!"
Jeez - like hungry heffers at the troth! Whatever happened to having a cocktail then deciding about dinner?
So not quite understanding the situation, I asked the HH (this will be my new name for them from now on! LOL) if we were ordering appetizers or the full dinner... (didn't quite get to finish my sentence, as BOY! I just about got attacked by the herd!
From different directions the replies came at me, like a flock of swooping (hungry) ravens!
"This IS dinner!"
"Well, we're not going to move YET again to go get dinner!"
"You order what you want - it's so easy!" (you remember her from yesterday's rant?
"We're HUNGRY"

Allrightythen... OMG!
What I was simply trying to ask the HH (since they'd ordered before I got there) was if they had ordered appetizers to accompany their first drink or,
if they had ordered their full dinner.

Anyway, once the beast got a bit of food in them, they calmed the h*** down, and the conversation with the ladies near me (we were 9 total) was cool.

DH called at 9:30 to inquire if I was ready to leave, and came by to get me, waiting for me at the entrance (they didn't know why I was leaving or that DH was waiting for me).

"You're leaving NOW???"
"Why???"
Blah, blah, blah, blah... What? are you talking to me. I can't hear you!

I made the effort.
It's over.

And yes, I'm pretty sure some (I know who) made comments as I left.
My ears were on fire.

Do I give a D***?
Nope.

Went home to my wonderful DH and my sweet cat.

THE END.

Well done piscean_goddess. Now, time to find some new friends :-) I mean, you need people more on your wavelength. I recommend gradually bringing some new people into your life and gradually having less time for the HH's. I have met some of my most stimulating friends by doing things I feel passionate about (arts groups, writing clubs, environmental groups, hiking groups etc). Anyway, I don't mean to sound patronising here - just that it would be nice for you to have fewer obligations to spend time with those women.

Thank you Feebee, you ase right!
I've actually been looking at various volunteer options - sure I'll make new friends this way.
Have a great weekend.

Sounds horrid.

I don't have many great friends because either all of the people I know are drunks with no control who want to rely on me (The sober one) to haul their vomiting selves around (um, no!) or are completely square and do absolutely nothing that can even by misconstrued as fun because they want to "set a good example" for their gazillions of babies that they may or may not have had yet.

Ughh! I feel your pain!

KiKi -- You sound like me! I began 'pruning back' both of those types of relationships this year and have had the pleasant surprise of meeting some more balanced types.
