Betty Crocker was the NAME given to symbolize General Mills continuing tradition of quality and service to its consumers, as floods of questions and responses came pouring in to General Mills, since 1921. Crocker was the last name of the retired director of the company and Betty was chosen because it was a "friendly, warm" name. The signature was that of a secretary and "her" face was a combination of women who worked for the company. The face and signature of Betty Crocker stands for helpfulness and trustworthiness, but SHE is NOT a REAL person. wink SARA LEE IS A REAL PERSON, however. smile

Avocados have 250 calories but are LOADED with good stuff! A serving is one-fifth of a medium avocado, or about one ounce, which is 50 calories and contributes nearly 20 beneficial nutrients to the diet. They have nearly 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Phytonutrients are thought to help prevent many chronic diseases; 20 vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients, including 4% of the recommended Daily Value (DV) for vitamin E, 4% vitamin C, 8% folate, 4% fiber, 2% iron, 4% potassium, with 81 micrograms of lutein and 19 micrograms of beta-carotene.

A medium (2 & 1/2" - 3") potato has about 160 calories and a large (3&1/2" - 4") potato has 275 calories, and that is WITHOUT butter, sour cream, cheese or anything else that could hundreds of extra calories to the potato. BUT, they ARE loaded with a healthy dose of magnesium, iron, potassium, fiber, vitamin C and niacin.

So, tastes aside, wink , other than gaucamole, the AVOCADO is the winner with the least amount of calories! And since this is cooking for kids, here is an intersting tidbit: >>> The avocado's smooth, creamy consistency makes it one of the first fresh fruits a baby can enjoy. Sodium- and cholesterol- free, avocados contain valuable nutrients including 8% of the recommended Daily Value (DV) for folate; 4% DV for fiber and potassium, 4% DV for vitamin E; and 2% DV for iron.<<<

Okay, here you go:
Next question.

Which conventionally grown fruit should you try to buy organic? Remember, some fruits are more succeptible to toxins than others!

Avocados or apples?

Okay, some fruits are borderline buys because the pesticide residues are negligible: asparagus, avocados, bananas, broccoli, cauliflower, kiwi, sweet corn, mangoes, onions, papaya, sweet peas, pineapples. These fruits are NOT worth spending the extra money buying organic.

The fruits that ARE worth buying, because even with washing, the pesticides remain on the skins are called: THE DIRTY DOZEN-Apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, imported grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, raspberries, spinach, and strawberries fall within this category. Even after washing, all these fruits and vegetables, when grown by conventional methods, consistently carry higher levels of pesticides than others, according to USDA lab testing. So opt for organic whenever possible, and read on for better ways to buy when prices are sky high.

So, between avocados or apples, I would choose APPLES. laugh

The red fruits have phytochemicals and lycopene for good health and some are even rich in beta carotene
