Three friends sold their RVs this year. One has developed health problems that resulted in his wife having to hitch the 5th-wheel on her own and drive it home. Another says that higher gas prices have made RVing much less attractive. The third bought a cottage.

I have another friend who insists there is nothing like having a holiday home on wheels. He has managed to see a lot of places he couldn't have afforded to visit if he had to pay air fare and hotel rates.

What are your thoughts on RVing? Is it a travel option whose time is past, or is it more viable than ever (in spite of higher gas prices)? Let us know your thoughts.

I read somewhere recently that RV's have serious chemical outgassing (from all the plastic inside) and can cause many allergic/sensitivity problems. Even asthmatic symptoms etc.

But I also know of a retired couple who just bought their first and are travelling all over the place.

One thought is that gas is very expensive. I know people with RV's who are leaving them parked because of the gas situation.

However, on HGTV there is a show on about family RV vacations so who knows?

My husband and I want to get one and put it on some lake property to have a weekend getaway. Not sure we'd drive it around much tho.

JustineHH, thanks for mentioning the off-gasing thing. That's something I hadn't thought of. I've only spent time in older RVs, but I'm sure it's an issue for those who are environmentally sensitive. I wonder if there has been any move in the industry to incorporate less toxic materials, as is the case in the home building industry. Hmmmm.

Joanj, the interesting thing about HGTV is that it shows how trends vary from one part of the country to another. There are also differences re what appeals to US, Canadian, and UK audiences. On the pro RV side: I know of several people who have purchased lots in "ghost towns" i.e., former mining and logging towns and set up RVs on them each season. Since the sites all have sewer, water and electrical hook-up already in place (from when a company-town house sat on the property), putting an RV on the lot can create a pretty economical vacation property. I think Niho was the name of the company selling the lots, most of which are in BC, if I recall. In Quebec and Eastern Ontario, there are several "camp grounds" where people set up RVs as their summer "cottage" - most return to the same site each year - some even have seasonal gardens set up around their vehicles complete with garden gnomes! So I can see that the idea of parking an RV for the season has appeal. Personally, if I had a house on wheels, I'd like to get some mileage out of it. Let us know if you decide to take the plunge - and send a report from your first trip!

Thanks Janet, I'll do that.

We are currently looking for lake property and figured that an RV that slept a lot of people would make a good weekend getaway for the kids and grandkids-plus our dogs! We may get a used RV as well, which will save us more money.

The ghost town idea is great! I'm a history buff so would love to do that!
