Actually bettas are carnivores and eat bugs and stuff. The only time I ever fed veggies to my bettas was when they had gotten constipated and needed the ruffage. Just a few pieces of cooked frozen pea.

I don't think it would hurt them if they had a little now and then for a snack, but I wouldn't keep it in their regular every day diet.

Finally got my 10 gallon divided tank all cycled...boy, that sure took a long time !! Maybe because I didn't have an airstone in there for a long time. I think the bacteria need an air source to really get going.

I put the Penguin bio-wheel mini in there that I took from the 20 long I set aside...ever since I did that the water has been crystal clear and Neon's fins have been healing up and growing to beat the band !

Those bio-wheels are GREAT !! (of course this one is for up to 20 gallons so I"m getting twice the filtrations the experts say I really need for that tank.)

Of course...it's a powerful filter and I also have an airstone in the tank too....so quite a bit of current is stirred up in there. In order to cut it down a bit for the bettas..so they aren't swirling around in there like a bunch of hyperactive pixies I set the filter and airstone in one of the end sections, with a plastic canvas divider seperating them from the bettas. Works GREAT !! (but of course...now I can only have 3 bettas in there instead of 4.. (pout)...but, they're happy and very healthy !

See !!

Gorby is in there now healing up from a seeminly endless cycle of fin issues. Hope this does the trick for him !

I am definitly going to be doing some redecorating in that tank. All the plants in there exept for one are live...and could do with a bit more light for sure..but they're hanging in there...probably because some portion of the day they get direct sunlight. I may just switch to silk plants.

OOOO!!! I just found some compact flourescent lights that will fit in the hood for that tank...The box says "Fits in all aquarium hoods using incandescent bulbs" They're 10W 6500K natural daylight bulbs and I found them at walmart for only 4$ and change. Two of them in my 10 gallon should take care of the wattage needs for any plants I have in there now...and I can get MORE! YIPPEEE!!

Rusty seems to be pouting a little because I have started to feed him less, but other than that he is doing good and his water looks nice and clear, but he is getting a water change tonight since it has been over a week now I believe, and I try to do it once a week so he stays nice and healthy.

On another note, the little boy I nanny for has a fancy goldfish with another fish (we aren't sure what it is) and one of those black fish with the big bulgy eyes in a 10 gallon with filtration. He got the black fish and the goldfish from me on Friday as a birthday present. However, today we came home and the black fish was hiding behind the filter and he barely has any fins left and they are severely shredded, his one eye looks injured, and he is definitly missing some scales. We picked them from the same tank, although the goldfish is a little bigger than the black one. We saw the goldfish picking on the black one when we were standing there. He hadn't fed them since the day before yesterday cause the idiot at the pet store where he got the tank told him not to feed them everyday. I had him feed them and the goldfish attacked the food and began to leave the black fish alone. I put some stress coat in there, and I recomended to his dad to get a little cave or something so they can hidem, as well as some medicine. Any other suggestions? I did not know goldfish were aggressive fish, and this tank is definitly big enough for 3 small fish.

Ah Sthenn, that would be Neon...lol...I see him as more of a neon purple color..almost just the same as the blinkie in my signature...but he does look bluish in that picture.

BG...when you see fish all together in those tanks at the fish store...you won't be seeing their natural behavior. They generally aren't in those tanks long enough to get to know each other and start working on a pecking order of any kind. So many come and go all the time it always keeps the community in a bit of a confused state. You start to see thier true nature after you get them home and they are settled in one place with the same fish for awhile. They then have an opportunity to test each other out and find out who's the bully and who's the sap.

Generally goldfish should only be kept with other goldfish and not mixed with anything else. I believe that's because they are such dirty fish...lol..they put out alot of ammonia and their water needs to be cleaned often...but I imagine there are other reasons too.

If that one fish continues to be a problem for the little black one, I would seperate the bully out if you can. Also, those fancy goldfish can get pretty big..you may have to consider a bigger tank down the road.
