A reader contacted me recently looking for suggestions on the proper varnish or sealant to use on small sand dollars to make them durable enough to be earrings.

The problem is that the varnish she's tried so far never seems to fully dry.

I've never tried this before, but I thought that perhaps a terracotta sealant would work.

Does anyone have any other recommendations for sealing porous objects like these?

Hi Chris! I'm not sure if this will work for sand dollars, but I have used Future floor wax as a sealant for polymer clay which is relatively porous. A lot of the other finishes I tried left a sticky film. This one dried completely. Hope this helps. :-)
