...on Alternet. There's an article posted there about women who have difficulty obtaining tubal ligations. The resulting debate is...um...interesting. I'm amazed at the proportion of people on there who'd call themselves "progressive" (most alternet readers are) who still think all women must have babies!

There is a link on the no kidding site www.nokidding.net (to related, but non-affiliated organizations) that says "Getting sterilized is your right!" The link doesn't work for some reason. If anyone can access this page, it would certainly be beneficial to post the content here.

An interesting thing happened to me yesterday...

I read about an online friend getting a vasectomy, and they have a very much planned 5 month old. My first thought was, "What??!!!". I think I've read too much about cf people being happily sterilized, but women with children regretting sterilization (Of course in this case, it's the man). My next thought was, "BAD programing, yay, getting snipped".

I know the CF hardcore people run into this problem all the time and some of the posts are hilarious. But by the sounds of it, though, it's a very real issue, especially in certain US states.

If you've made a conscious decision to not have children, who is the doctor to say that he knows better than you? And as someone points out on the alternet posting, if you do change your mind, it's not his problem. He just did what you asked for. You sign for it, you own it :-)

I'm looking at Essure at the moment, and if I can't get it done under provincial healthcare here I'll seriously consider a tubal. And woe betide any doctor who tries to lecture me. They'll get an earful, and the clinic and the health region will get a complaint letter. It seems to be a mantra here that "my choices are none of your business" and it's about time some of these people learned to stop preaching...

Thanks for posting this! Very interesting. My guy got his vasectomy today. It wasn't that bad - very little pain. He has an ice pack on his package, and they gave him painkillers to take. But he hasn't taken them yet. He was supposed to take a pill before we got there, but he lost it. He told the gal at the reception desk that he lost it, and she said "you better find it before your kids get to it." And we said, we don't have kids, that's why we are getting a vasectomy! I guess they assume when most people get a vasectomy they already have kids. They probably talked about it after we left. LOL.

Beware, Alternet is full of right-wing piggy trolls just looking to rile things up. Guess they have nothing better to do!
