You might not be aware that you are being misled:
It is so very important to watch your intake of trans fat ï¿½ even when you may be misled into thinking you are consuming ï¿½0 gramsï¿½ as indicated on the box of your favorite snack. Know that there is a loophole with the FDA that states that if a food contains 0.5 grams or less of trans fat PER SERVING, then that manufacturer can claim ï¿½0 grams of trans fatï¿½ on the box. Letï¿½s take a box of Ritz Crackers for example. When you add up the types of fats listed on the box and then subtract it from the total fat listed, 0.5 grams of fat is unaccounted for. This is where the 0.5 grams or less of trans fat loophole comes into play. This means that in one serving of Ritz Crackers, which is 5 crackers, you will be consuming 0.5 grams of trans fat. This adds up! With 26 servings in the box, the entire box contains 13 grams of trans fat! This is a lot more than the ï¿½0 gramsï¿½ the manufacturer claims.
The moral of the story here is to look at the ingredients of foods. If you come across ï¿½hydrogenatedï¿½ or ï¿½partially hydrogenatedï¿½ anything, you are no doubt consuming trans fat ï¿½ even when the box says otherwise. In the case of Ritz Crackers, an ingredient listed is ï¿½partially hydrogenated cottonseed oilï¿½ ï¿½a type of trans fat, and there's a whopping 13 grams of it to boot.
