I am new to Wicca and was wondering...
At the moment I have no money to spend on supplies. But I don't want to wait to come into money to practice Wicca. Can I use elements in nature as my tools? If so later can I upgrade my tools when prosperity is more plentiful for me?

Well personaly I would say go for it and when you feel it is right and have the money to do so then upgrade!! I think it is your intention that counts not the money or tools that you use!!!

Absolutely! In fact, nature probably offers some of the most effective tools anyway smile

I would say that it would be preferable to use natural things. Your wand could be an interesting stick from your yard, your cauldron a pretty bowl from your kitchen. You could fashion a pentacle out of a craft wreath and some twine. The limits exist only with your imagination...

I wish I had seen some of this before I spent money on all the goodies. Though, I do love my goodies. smile

Thank you for your imput. I really appreciate it!! I asked this question on another site and got some sharp responses. I'm new at this. It's nice to know that the people here are more open-minded and kind. smile
I also have another question...
When practicing the craft do I have to be unobserved by all? My backyard isn't very private but I rather be outside when communing, if someone sees me is it taboo??

Rosethorn, welcome and Merry meet!

When I decided to dedicate and make the Craft part of my life path, my funds and privacy were very limited also. And I'm glad actually, it made me think and explore.

My first wand was a gnarled piece of an oak branch that somehow kept showing up in the back yard. My altar cloth is hand-embroidered by my grandmother years and years ago for a small table, my representation of the Lord is a pine cone, the Lady, a fresh rose. I use a conch shell I found on the beach for my cauldron and refill it with fresh sand from time to time, when needed. I think its not so much about having all the 'pc' things the books tell you (Although I agree w/ froggie that all the goodies are wonderful and fun) it's about what speaks to you, what hits you in your gut as 'right' for your personal sacred space.

As far as communing outside, my back yard isn't all that private either and honestly most of my rituals, mediation is done inside in a room I've set up specifically aside for that, but when I do feel the need to be outdoors I just do it.

I remember one morning, it was close to noon and I had finished grinding up a huge bunch of herbs I had hanging to dry and had a bunch of the stalks and stuff left over. Well, I trotted out into my front yard and was putting them next to a majestic live oak and my neighbor chose that exact moment to walk over and borrow a drill from my other half. He looked at me, I looked at him and that was the end of it. People choose to see what they do. Do what you need to but be aware, you'll find the balance.

I think most would agree that few things are taboo in Paganism. Wicca, and Paganism in general, are ways of celebrating the wonders and cycles of nature. Isn't it appropriate to perform rituals and such outside? If someone sees you and you are comfortable with that, why not??

I tend to perform most of my spells and rituals inside because I'm a bit self conscious (ie afraid people will think I'm a freak if they see me). That's just my hang up, and I would like to overcome it.

As far as ritual tools go, always remember that they are props to get in tune with your subconscious. I don't think any God or Goddess is going to punish you for using a kitchen knife instead of a store-bought athame. From what I have read of other witches, I think as you acquire knowledge and wisdom from performing rituals, you need the tools less and less. So, play around and find what is right for you!!

Ahh, well put. I would urge you to consider using nothing at all other than your own visualization before waiting to be able to afford something in order to begin.
For me, my tools really consist of the space around me. The scents and sounds-my altar and my visualization of what I am trying to accomplish vs. gathering any tools. I do love pretty and unique tools but can not bring myself to spend the money.
As for having to be outside, see above. I do have rituals that feel right being outside and much of what I do is done outside but I also have my own sacred space for my solitary stuff and then another for when I include the children. I am lucky in that if someone sees me where I live, they would be so grateful to have found another living being, I doubt they would argue. hee hee..
