Unlimited Power is a book by Anthony Robbins.

I'm reading it again, and some of you might be familiar with it. Would any of you like to discuss ideas in the book?

In Chapter 1 - "The Commodity of Kings," he says he was able to dramatically change how he felt about himself and change the results he was getting in his life, using techniques he'll teach in the book. He said there are seven characteristics of highly successful people that give them the fire to do whatever it takes to succeed. Those characteristics are:

Trait Number One: Passion! All of these people have discovered a reason, a consuming, energizing, almost obsessive purpose that drives them to do, to grow, and to be more!

Trait Number Two: Belief! People who succeed on a major scale differ greatly in their beliefs from those who fail. Our beliefs about what we are and what we can be precisely determine what we will be.

Trait Number Three: Strategy! A strategy is a way of organizing resources.

Trait Number Four: Clarity of Values! Values are specific belief systems we have about what is right and wrong for our lives.

Trait Number Five: Energy! It is almost impossible to amble languorously toward excellence.

Trait Number Six: Bonding Power! Nearly all successful people have in common an extraordinary ability to bond with others, the ability to connect with and develop rapport with people from a variety of backgrounds and beliefs.

Trait Number Seven: Mastery of Communication! The way we communicate with others and the way we communicate with ourselves ultimately determine the quality of our lives.

What do you guys think about these seven traits he lists? Do you agree, or disagree about any of them? What do you think goes into being successful?

This sounds like a hyped-up and 'brand new dynamic' way of presenting old information. All these exclamation marks make them sound as if this person has discovered the secret of Life. But he is just proposing ancient and traditional methods to suit the modern desire for personal success.

The eightfold path recommends these things, but in a much more subtle and discreet way.

No the book did not change you. YOU changed you. The book and the contents might have been a catalyst, but the reason things resonate within us, is because tey touch a dormant chord of recognition and agreement. if you thought the book was not good, you would not have changed. you would have treated it with ridicule and abandoned it, but you did not.
So you acted upon the contents and on what they said to you.
Give yourself the credit for being bright enough to use your discerning mind.! smile

Holly, I believe that once we have passion, we can develop all the other qualities. Without passion nothing will work. Your comments.

Holly,

I have been a voracious reader. Out of all the self development books I read, I liked Tommy Robbins most. He has got magnetic attraction and gives real solutions rather than just lectures.
If we begin with his first chapter, we can continue and make it sort of work shop on the book. Your comments.

I first learned about Tony Robbins many years ago through a friend of mine named Lisa. His career was rather new then and he had only the one book out and his first tapes had just been released, but he was already a huge star. My friend was very taken by him (star struck), so together we came up with the money to buy two tickets to one of his seminars when he came through our area. It was a LOT of money for us at the time... actually still is the most money i've ever spent on a ticket, and i didn't even particularly want to go. The seminar was all about sales, as well, of which i had no interest.

By some fluke, we were chosen out of line to sit in the front row, almost in the center, in a theatre that easily had over a thousand people seated, and more standing along the walls. We had no V.I.P. status, so this is a bit of a mystery. Prior to the seminar, Lisa and i were writing up our personal goals one day, and she listed as one of her dreams to one day meet Anthony Robbins. During the seminar, again by coincidence (or perhaps from looking at her enraptured face) he chose to single her out to demonstrate how to condition an aversion to chocolate (thank God he didn't pick ME! laugh ) and they talked back and forth before everyone for several minutes, and it was very fun. When we went on break, I turned to her and said, "Well that was easy, you just accomplished one of your goals!" She looked at me with a dumb look, so i reminded her of her goal to meet him one day, and the realization of what had just happened shifted her perspective about possibilities in her life... that dreams can come true, sometimes just as unexpectedly as that.

For me... you couldn't have gotten me to go to a seminar on sales if it were free!!... except that i loved my friend and it was important to her to go and she begged me to go with her because she was frightened. However, i still to this day greatly value everything i learned that day!... including what i learned about what motivates people to buy products! Even though i don't work in sales. I felt like i learned a lot about people different from myself and about my society. The subject matter was fascinating, and he was a great speaker. I still have my notes. It was worth every penny.

I think it's very valuable to go to travelling seminars. Not every speaker will turn out to be exciting for us, you have to experiment, but some will, and there is something about seeing a person right before you that leaves a greater impression.

Yes, passion i think is essential to most great endeavors.

However, i don't think of passion as being universally good. I think it depends on how it is directed and applied. Passion is like a strong and energetic horse... the better the horse, the better you should be sure of your riding skills, so you can direct it properly and safely.

On the bad side, passions can represent an utter lack of self-control... of anger and violence, lust, addictions, and a lack of consistency of effort.

My family was very passionate and valued passion. My father had/has passion for art and intellect, and encouraged his children to pursue their interests with passion and without regard for conformity or making a living. hahah laugh My mother's passions were for art, music, and sentimentality. But they each had a darker side of passion, too, which hopefully i have avoided. I think we tend to pick up passion from our childhood modeling.

I also think we pick up passion from living through dramatic events. Many people here on this forum have lived through dramatic events. It forges people to care strongly about many things. I have a theory about this... i think when we live through such events we absorb energy... and that energy does not just fade away. Either we consciously redirect it to accomplish some good... or it will work against us in the form of depression, addiction, anger, or some other negative way.

I think this is where traits no.s 3 and 4 come into play... strategy and values. Strategy helps you to direct passion to lead you to places you wish to go, and not where you would not wish to go. Values, of course, helps you do it hopefully without harming yourself or others.

I'm not sure though why traits no. 1 (passion) and 5 (energy) are listed seperately, or why traits no. 6 (bonding) and 7 (communication) are considered so different?
