blush Ok, I have a really dumb question...

I want to sew a new bag for my laptop. I have worked out how I can do this, but I am just unsure as to what fabric would be best to use. I want it to be strong and sturdy. However, I only have a very basic sewing machine, so I cannot use anything too heavy.

Does anyone out there have any ideas or tips?? Thanks.

Not a dumb question -- A few years ago, I made a carrying case (bag) for my grandson's electronic keyboard he got for Christmas when he was 12) (not a huge one, but a portable one abou 2 feet long). I made it out of black felt and straight stitching. It was very sturdy and held up very well. If you used felt, you could double it for reinforcement. Hope this helps.

For something like a laptop, I would use something like denim. You don't need a fancy sewing machine, but you might want some denim needles to work with it.

I made a my laptop bag out of cotton fabric, ultra firm padding, plastic canvas and bias tape. I made it open lengthwise, rather than horizontally, and you'd be amazed at how much lighter it can feel carrying it, that way. I also put in a full-length cotton material separator between the laptop and upper side of the bag so that I could carry wires etc. without scratching my laptop. To complete the set, I made a matching purse with shoulder strap. It really makes a great statement!

I have abused it, most mercilessly, over the past couple of years, and everything is still in great condition.

And, I sewed almost all of it by hand. I'm a great lover of hand-sewing.
