Emg, glad to hear some of your bettas are doing wonderful now! i too am having a problem with fin rot. willy has a very minor case of it but for now i am just trying to do frequent water changes (at least twice a week) before medicating him. all i have is melafix, which i heard is too strong - what do you think?

Bettagirl, i'm so sorry about squishy! from past posts it seemed like he was a phenominal fish to you and i'm so sorry for your loss. good luck with your new fish!

April, right now all I do for my fish is lots of clean water changes and extra salt...and NO gravel or decorations in thier tanks. Just one silk plant to add color and interest for them. Even with that I still a few fish who seem to get ragged fins just when it looks like they're healing up.

Sometimes it may not necessarily be finrot per say...if you start treating with clean water and extra salt as soon as you notice an issue, that can head off finrot before it starts. If you have him in a one gallon tank, I would do a 50% water change every other day..just to keep it good and clean...along with extra salt..say, 1 teaspoon of aquarium salt per gallon, instead of 1/2.

Hope that does if for you and Willy April. All the best!

This is very true. My current fish, Jalapeno, always has torn fins, but so far I haven't seen any fin rot on him...go figure...*crosses fingers* He's been doing fine with water changes 2-4 times a week and extra salt. Buuuuuuuuuuut who knows, it really depends on the fish as well...MelaFix is what I use, April, and my fish didn't seem as happy while he was being treated, but it did the trick with Ich.

I have had my betta for about a year now. He's on my desk at work. I have a problem that I just can't seem to find an answer to. Wondering if anyone else's betta had this problem too. Mine suddenly, about 2 weeks ago, got a very swollen belly. He looks likes he swallowed a marble. I only feed him every other day and just a pinch. I have heard that he could be constipated and to give him a pea, which didn't work. He doesn't act like he's sick or anything. I'm afraid to give him anymore flakes because I'm afraid he will literally bust open. Does anyone know what I can do for him?

can your betta swim normally or does he stay towards the top and have a hard time moving? sounds to me like it is a swimbladder disorder which is a problem with buoyancy in which case his swimbladder will protrude.

one of my bettas, gavin, had this problem and he lived for a while with it until he passed away. if anyone else agrees with me that it may be the swimbladder, then i would try by not feeding him for a few days and then very small amounts after that.

but before anything, i'm going to let the pros on this forum tell you more ... good luck!

hi there 11chris
Does the stomach look like its full of fluid or solid.I've heard of a salt bath to help relieve the bloat, BUT i have never done this and its very stressful AND you have to make sure you use the salt(not table salt) according to how much water you have dont just dump it in there. You could aslo fast him up to 3 days.Plus keep his water clean, clean, clean, this will help him feel more comfprtable. I dont want to sound like a know it all trust me i'm not but theres a ton of people on here that know more then I do.
