I think I got interested because everytime my Grandmother would visit, she was doing it and as a kid I thought I'm going to do that and I did.

I just learned over this past weekend! My great grandmother used to knit and crochet all the time, but I never really had an interest in it and she never showed me how. My daughter expresed an interest in knitting when a new store opened near us with knitting and crochet supplies. We took a little class and started knitting. My sister in law was here over the weekend and she offered to show me how to crochet. She taught me the basics and I had a great time with it.

I found your site and it's really helped me figure it out. I made the dishcloth yesterday and am quite proud! LOL Your instructions are great in those articles.

Looking forward to the next lesson!

LizLady,
Eva is posting crochet lessons right from the basics on up. Check thme out at her site.

I think I've always been interested in crochet. We lived in a small community as a child and I was always fascinated by the local ladies and their crocheted doilies. Never learned until I was in my late 20's though (20+ years ago now--I'm getting old - LOL!)

I've always wanted to crochet since I was about 10 or 12 but no one in my family knew how to. So at 20 I joined the YWCA and learned how to crochet and I haven't stopped since.

I got interested in crocheting because I was so fascinated seeing Mom use thread & a crochet hook to make bedroom dresser scarves for bridal shower gifts which everyone raved about. During WW II Mom had ladies come to the house early evenings to teach them how to crochet. After lessons they would have dessets & tea.

I always was facinated by crochet, but my mother and grandmother only knitted. My mom tried to teach me, but since she really didn't know, and I'm a leftie <img src="/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" /> , it was not very successful! I learned to crochet from my wonderfull mil, while engaged to my dh. She is such an accomplished crocheter, as is her mother and sister, that she actually taught me, using her left hand. Her mom, my husband's grandmother, would crochet up an entire box full of baby clothes each time one of her grandchildren told her they were expecting! I have the most lovely little dresses, coats, matching panties, blankies, hats, booties, just a ton of pretty things for MY future granddaughters! Here's to hoping for granddaughters!

This is an old post, but I thought I would bring up the topic again!

About 7 years ago several co-workers were crocheting afghans as Christmas gifts on their lunch hours. I loved the look of the afghans and asked them to teach me. A lefty tought me! How's that for backwards?

Since then I have joined a Guild and started the prayer shawl ministry at my church. I'm really excited and in love with crochet - I really wish I could make a living out of it!

I got interested when the lady down the street taught my sister but wouldn't teach me. Since then i tried to be better than my sister at crochet (and succeeded)and then i wanted to make things for my first son. There were no patterns i could find so i made up my own. years Before when i was living in a caravan on the Gemfields in central Queensland. I had a book with motifs and i literally taught myself to read the patterns and do diffent stitches from it while hubby was away working. When my boys were young i discovered some old McCalls magazines a friend had stored and sent away to Annies Attic for a few patterns by mail. Then by accident i found some Crochet World mags and taught myself heaps more. I began adjusting patterns to fit myself, taught myself more complicated stitches. I found books in the library and practiced stitches and techniques, discovered Tunisian crochet and found everything i could, made my own hooks and taught myself. Six years ago i moved here and joined a spinning club and taught the women there how to do Tunisian and Double ended crochet and at a Historical Village. I now consider myself an intermediate crocheter.Crochet has kept me sane I love it.

Indeed - Jacquiw, how did you make your hooks? Also - you say Gemfields - is that as in precious stones?
