I'm 47 years old with a ton of skin problems. I have acne and a lot of old scars, huge pores, oily skin, and really dark sun spots. The wrinkles don't bother me so much it's all the other skin problems. I've had acne since I was about 12. I use neutragena make-up and cleansers because it has salycic (sp.) acid in it. I can't use anything with peroxide because I'm allergic to it. So that lets out proactive. Does anyone know of any skin care solutions to help me? My face looks really bad.

Have you thought about going to a dermatologist? I thought I had acne and it turned out to be roseascea (which is worse than having acne I found out). My dermatologist prescribed a topical medicine that has helped to clear up some of my problem.

Ye, I've been to a dermatologist. He recommended microdermabration which my insurance will not cover. And another one gave me a script for a cream that would burn off the top layer of skin and I'd have to have plastic surgery to fix it. Again no ins. coverage. And then they just tell me to keep my face clean. I must be seeing the wrong Drs.

I'm sorry to hear your having such difficulty with your skin. It sounds as though you have a couple of different issues with your skin and each needs to be treated separately. First I feel that you need to address the issue of your acne. Have you tried using products that are botanically based, without chemical dyes and fragrances? These are known skin irritants and will irritate any skin condition. If your products contain mineral oil than you are coating your skin and not allowing it to breath and absorb the healthy products. There are products that are free from skin irritants that contain salicylic acid that comes from plants.

Once your acne is under control you can gradually add or change products that will help with the discoloration you mentioned. Again using products that are safe and free of skin irritants that contain kojic acid. Kojic acid acts as a skin lightener and is found in mushrooms, it's function is to lighten skin and even out skin tones.

I hope that some of this information was helpful and feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Vitamin E is also invaluable for almost any skin issue. You can buy it in capsules and break them open (either with a needle or fingernail scissors) and apply it directly to the skin, or add it to a natural oil or lotion blend to moisturize the face, or to an astringent, like witch hazel, if your skin is already too oily.

Hi rayne falls, just wondering do you smoke? alot of people who smoke with acne find that it clears up once they stop.

Also is it a particular area of your face that has the worst breakouts? What type of acne? Also what kind of food do you eat processed etc?? I think you have to look at yourself as a whole, and start from the inside out. I would first do a cleanse that cleared up my skin alot! also steaming your face to open the pores helps as well as clay masks. Let me know & i'll do my best to help!
