The story tells us what mommy did after the fact, but makes no mention of where she was during the actual destruction. To me, that this child was left unattended to reek such havoc is an important point. I question the reasons for this omission... Perhaps because no one wants to admit that mommy was negligent for letting her toddler run loose in a mall?
What makes me mad is that she didn't even have the decency to apologize. She WAS negligent!! What do you think people would have said if instead of destroying the sand painting, the unsupervised child had run into a child molester and got kidnapped.
Aimag, they would have said, "Poor kid and Poor mommy." No one is going to say, "Why weren't you watching your kid, lady?" That's the way our society is these days.
I can understand that parents can't keep an eye on their kids all the time, and that's okay. But aimag is right - anything could have happened while the child was unattended.
I wonder if they even know who did it? If not, I'd be pretty darn embarrassed to read about my kid in the AP.
LOL I'd be embarrased too!! This story reminded me of one time my little brother at 2-yrs-old broke into my room and smeared Chapstick on the inside of my CD player. I swear the little devil knew what he was doing!! LOL!!
Myrabeth, you're right. The blame would be placed on any and everyone available except for the one who should be blamed. It's a shame how children and adults alike are babied and coddled in our society. And btw, had I been that child, my mother would have surely but a hurting to MY bottom, toddler or not!!
That's really a shame. The article doesn't really say if the mother even apologized. Interestingly, these same monks did a mandala in Little Rock at the Heifer International Headquarters. A friend of a co-worker (who works for Heifer) was telling me it took them several weeks to make one there.
