I am trying to get Oprah to do a show on being child free in America. We need to get this topic in the spotlight. You can go to Oprah.com and go to contact and click on contacting Oprah about a show idea.
Maybe if we get enough people out there to ask for this show with any luck it will happen!!!

That would be awesome, but I wonder if she'd pass on the idea... her core audience is probably SAHMs.

True, but Oprah never wanted kids and the only reason she had one when she was 14 because she was a rape victim (how awful!)

The show maybe so controversial that it will boost her ratings, and it will give the SAHMs something to complain about.

Good point. If she does a show on this topic, though, we had better be braced and ready. The backlash will fall on all CFs. That may sound paranoid, but SAHMs get a little scary when they feel their chosen path has been threatened. It might lead to a big debate on Dr. Phil like the working mom vs. SAHM thing he did a couple of years ago. Ok, now I'm wanting to push this just to see the fight... I'm so twisted.

I hate to be a wet blanket, but...

Oprah has had plenty of opportunity, over the past 20 years, to be vocal about not having children. She just hasn't done it. I could be wrong (I'm only the most occasional viewer of her program), but...yes, she'll talk about how not having kids has allowed her to be a great philanthropist and think about the world's children in general (and massive kudos to her for doing so), but she's never said anything about how it might have benefitted her. I.e., she's never been affirmatively, positively childfree in her public persona (even though she might be in her point of view).

I just don't think she'll change her stripes now. Her audience is primarily comprised of mothers...and she knows it. She is nothing if not a shrewd businesswoman. She doesn't make her money by stirring the s^%t...she's no Jerry Springer! Rather, she likes to cover topics that either make her viewers cry out of sympathy, experience strong anger about others' injustices, or feel absolutely wonderful about themselves --- not question their entire set of life choices!

Out of curiousity, I did a google search on Oprah & childfree. I found an article that was posted here recently from "O Magazine" by Kim Catrall about her choice to be childfree. So Oprah is willing to bring attention to childfree issues.

I know that Oprah has always been open about saying that she's childfree by choice, but only when she's asked about her CF status. It's not like she's running around as the patron saint of the childfree. Perhaps, as others pointed out, this is because so many moms watch her show, or perhaps she's just more focused on other things - maybe she sees her CF status as just one small aspect of her interesting life.

I also found an article by a CF woman who mentioned a particular Oprah show about motherhood being difficult - apparently it set off quite a drama. Here is the link. Below is the quote referring to that Oprah show:

"I saw an episode of Oprah Winfrey's show about motherhood being difficult, and several women came on to do a follow-up show, angry that Oprah had made motherhood look bad. When one guest was asked what was wrong with admitting that parenting wasn't always easy, the gal whined, "Some women out there might chose not to have children!" OH MY GOD. Call out the National Guard folks!!! The world is now over because some gal might not want children because she realized it wouldn't be easy."
