I have a precious red Betta fish named Toby, who is living happily on my dresser. His home is decorated merely with shiny white pebble stones (a plant wouldn't fit inside the bowl, even if the bowl is fairly large). I've been thinking of getting another Betta fish, and I'm getting him tomorrow.

I already have his bowl set up. I'm using bottled water, and the bowl is exactly the same as Toby's bowl. I am going to get some more pebbles from my friend tomorrow, and I was also thinking of buying new Betta food.....pellets! I have been feeding him some sort of Red Grub, and he doesn't seem to like it. He'll bite it, and sometimes will spit it back out. Is pellets a good idea? I can probably imeddiatly start feeding the new Betta pellets, but what about Toby? Would making a food change so sudden upset him or make him sick?

I also am stuck on choosing a name. I had a whole bunch lined up, but I can't seem to decide which name to use....

~Moby Dick (short form Moby)
~Marlin
~Geb
~Sushi
~Alpha
~Pooky

Have a favourite out of those, or have your own ideas to share? Any help will be appreciated. smile

Oh, I also need to know how to keep my Betta entertained. I try and put things in front of his bowl to keep him occupied (he likes looking at things that seem interesting to him), I talk to him, I put mirrors in front of his bowl....which leads me to something else.

When I put a mirror in front of Toby's bowl, Toby will sort of stare at it for a couple minutes, but he won't flare. He just stares, and loses intrest after awhile. Why is this? Is this because he doesn't have a problem with other Betta's? Only wondering....

Still no response? I'm going to get the Betta today, so I would REALLY appreciate any help before I go and get him.

Today is the day when I clean Toby's bowl. He hates it. When I try and get him into the net, he will either swim around it and refuse to let himself get netted, or when I do get him inside the net he'll jump right back inside his bowl. Thats why I get somebody else to do it most of the time. laugh

I was thinking of naming the new Betta Sushi or Marlin....I mean, it has to be a good name because I don't want to be calling my betta a name I dislike.

I woke up and Toby was swimming around, obviously bored. Nothing really intrests him....I put up a mirror to his bowl and he, again, did not flare. Strange...

I just bought a healthy new Betta fish. He is multiple colors (white, pink, purple, blue, red) and is pretty happy with his new home. I used tap water for his bowl, but used a water conditioner for safety. He is swimming around in his bowl, checking out everything around him. He was really finicky and hyper in the car, but now he seems more calm. I fed him, and he happily ate one Red Grub out of the two I gave him. I think he's saving the other one. The bowl is decorated with bright green gravel, but I'm hoping to get a plant soon. His bowl will have to be cleaned either Tuesday or Wensday, though Toby (my red Betta Fish) needs his bowl cleaned tomorrow. His is decorated with shiny white pebbles. And, I named the new Betta Sushi.

I am glad to say that both of them are happy and heathy (so it seems). I used to think I was overfeeding Toby, but he was smart. If I gave him too much food, he wouldn't eat anymore then he knew he should have. He poops (yes, I can see it laying at the bottle of the bowl) so that means no constipation!

Toby is the type of Betta that craves attention. Though he doesn't let it when you touch him, he will stare at you and blow bubbles until you talk to him or run your finger along his bowl. He is always occupied with things outside the water, like me, objects, and my cat.

Sushi, on the other hand, is pretty content swimming about doing nothing in particular. He hates it when you shake his bowl around, or run your finger along the glass (though I do it anyway ). He doesn't seem to be too interested with objects outside teh water, but enjoys swishing around. If he gets bored, I entertain him by talking to him, or putting a mirror against his bowl.

I love both my Betta's.

Hav any of you gotten new Betta's lately? Talk about them here! Have your have particular personalites? Do they have food favourites?

Hello there!

My first beta started not liking his red flake food and so I did buy him pellets and he did like it very much. With a new beta you can usually tell what they were raised eating before you took them home. My newer beta Eclipse now almost 1 year old would not touch the red flake food but loves the pellets so I give him pellets. You really have to go by what your beta will eat and just make sure not to feed too much or too often.

Keep in mind it is also important to have a variety of food that you give your beta. Every now and again I give Eclipse a freez-dried bloodwrorm or two. He really loves them. They also pack more protien. There was a new type of food I posted about months ago that did really help. It had extra nutrition and is designed to help improve over all health and prevent disease.Good food to give when your beta is sick or you think he is getting sick.

I am sure any name you pick will be perfect. The most important part is that you and your beta like it. smile
