As many of you read in my previous April post, last month I picked up 2 foster fids at the FWCAS meeting. They have been residing in my guestroom with regular forays to the playgyms on the porch. Their diet has been upgraded from only sunflower seeds to everything but sunflower seeds, except for a treat. They have been provided with toys to shred, ring, chew, beat up and cuddle with. They have been given new names because we didn't know their old ones and I waited all month for them to tell me. They have been responding to their new names so they must like them. thats great how they are coming along gini...
on a second note though do u think it may be possible that u could keep them? they have had a hard and long life before u rescued them and they are JUST finally settling in is it worth taking the risk to adopt them out then after a month or so they may becomone another victim of abuse or neglect... thats just my 2cents anyways...

The whole idea of fostering Philip, is to work with the birds (or dogs or cats) so that they will be suitable to go to a forever home. If the person fostering the birds decides to keep them, they will not have room to foster the next bird that needs help. Once they have been properly treated and socialized and introduced to a good diet, they really do adapt well to a new home. I would have trouble fostering because I'm sure I would want to keep them all, so I really admire people who can do this in the best interest of the bird (or dog or cat).

yep i no that is the idea but considering they have been traped in a horbile cage for 20yrs i personally dont think it is worth the risk of them geting adopted out then having the same neglect presented on them...

Philip, I enjoy fostering and getting the birds back in shape and over their trauma of losing their owners (good or bad). I have my hands full with just my three tiels, who, after 3 yrs, are just beginning to act like pets again, step up, solicit skitches, etc. I also have 2 grandbabies in other states and a third one on the way, so I will be doing a lot of traveling for the next few years so getting reliable pet sitters can be problematic. Also, for the next few years, I will have lots of little fingers visiting me.
However, the big reason I don't adopt them all is because Florida West Coast Avian Society Rescue has such a wonderful screening program for prospective new parronts. (www.fwcas.org) We do both before and after home visits to make sure the bird is going to a safe and desireable enviornment and has settled in OK. People have to fill out an extensive application and pay for a healthy bird check from our AV before the bird is released to them. So if someone is willing to go to that much trouble and invasion of privacy to adopt a bird, we know they really want it and are not interested in just getting a "free parrot" or are a bird hoarder or trying to get a cheap bird to resell. (these things actually happen) Knowing that both Lynda and Karen-the Rescue Co-ordinators are both meticulous about this, makes me feel assured that my foster fids are going to a good home. Plus I usually get to meet the prospective parront when they come to see the bird. We also gift them a 1 yr membership to FWCAS and hope they attend meetings and let us know how their new fid is doing and learn some new things along the way. If people object to our screening process, then we understand that they have other options to acquire a bird somewhere else.

I seem to have this problem, too, lol. In spite of all my protesting, when I got back from NJ and the birth of my grandson in September, I committed to adopting Shrek and Fiona. I got so many "Luv You"s and kissy-kissy noises, that I couldn't imagine them going to anyone else anymore!
Fiona keeping me company in the office...
Charley hanging out with his new fid-sibs
It must have been the right thing to do because when I went to the next show, at the end of Sept, I won a cage from the Grand Raffle. So now Fiona is in a new cage and I will get a new cage for Shrek also at the FWCAS Show in November.
If you think I learned my lesson, you would be wrong. Take a look at my siggy, lol.
