I have had my betta for just about 1 month now. I do water changes 2 times a week. He's in a 1 gallon bowl. Just this morning I noticed that it looks like his skin is peeling. Any ideas on what this is (it can't be good) and how to treat it?
Does it look like his scales are peeled up from his body, so that he looks like a pinecone if you look at him from above? If so it could be dropsy, which is very serious. I've read that Tuberculosis can also cause raised scales. I don't know really what it could be, I'm new to betta keeping myself.

Hi, Try doing complete water changes every 2 days and try some "Betta Fix Remedy" from the petstore - it's a gentler medicine to try first before you go on to something more specific and drastic when we pinpoint exactly what your fishie has. Make sure you are using a good water conditioner, and of course now chlorine or chloramines in the water. Handle him gently - sometimes at first your fishy has to get used to getting in the net - make sure you have the correct type of net - not a brine shrimp net and one that is the right size for your fishie - not too small - not too big - depends on the length and size of your fishy. Do you have an aquarium thermometer on the bowl? Consider upgrading his living environment to a small aquarium just for him to help ensure good water quality. If he is very sick, you would want to watch him carefully and treat him religiously in his own "hospital tank" until he is all better. I hope he is doing better.
I'm not sure if this is normal or not. The scales aren't peeling....just the skin. Sorry that I cannot be much of a help, as it is also happening to me.
