The supreme satisfaction is to be able to despise one's neighbor and this fact goes far to account for religious intolerance. It is evidently consoling to reflect that the people next door are headed for hell.

If we make a quick search, we will find that hell word is most used on this forum. Thanks.

Great quote from Crowley. He's definitely right on this one. Many organized religions (and especially the monotheistic ones) seem to inspire feelings of superiority over and contempt for others in their believers. I find this type of tribalistic mentality dangerous.

On the other hand, Crowley himself was willing to put down anyone that did not agree with his beliefs.

Aleister Crowey - Wikipedia

He had no respect for those that did not follow his way, either.

I think I'd be more open to the quote had it come from someone with true altruism. But there are many people, Christians included, that only feel good when they are putting others down.

Crowley isn't one of my favorite people.. but his quote was pretty insightful.. Personally, I am not so much afraid of what hell may hold as I am what heaven may hold. But, since I am not going to either location, I suppose the point is moot.

I wonder what happened to him during his childhood to make him so hateful. I'd never heard of him before now. I looked at the Website link....he is one scary looking feller.
