Forgive my ignorance, but who is the Dahli Llama? Is it a religious title like priest or pope and what religion does he belong to?

Is it a life long title or how does one become a or the Dahli Llama?

He is the Tibetan Buddhist leader. When a Lama dies, the monks look for signs of the one to take over. Usually these are miracles, or a display of knowledge that shouldn't be shown at a young age, etc. It is a life long title until you die, yes. Dahli is the current Lama. I think he was 6 or 7 when he was taken into the monastery for study and preparation. If you do a search on him, there is a lot of interesting information on him and what he has done in his life! His books are also very thought provoking. Oh and it is spelled Lama not Llama like the animal *smiles*

Thank you Jeanette and thank you for correcting me on my spelling of the name. I hope I didn't offend anyone with the mis-spelling.

So Lama is the title and Dahli is the man's name? Is that correct?

And being the Tibetan Buddhist leader, is that the same thing as the Catholic Pope?

The Dalai Lama, is the Tibetan Buddhist Political and Spiritual leader. His name is Tenzin Gyatso. Dalai Lama means "Ocean of Wisdom" (Lama meaning Guru or Wise leader....)he is specifically leader of Tibetan Buddhism, and is greatly respected by Buddhists everywhere, but he is not the Principal Lama of every Buddhist School.

he is a reincarnation of every lTibetan Lama of this tradition, before him, and is the 14th embodyment.
When the previous Lama died, Monks from this tradition began to look for his reincarnation (a 'Tulku') and eventually found him when he was aged around 2 years. The conditions and evaluations on recognising a reincarnated Lama are extremely complex and precise, and Tenzin Gyatso filled all the criteria.

Reincarnation of such a kind is very exact, whereas re-birth, also a Buddhist view or concept, is slightly different....

The Dalai Lama is also the Personification of Avalokitesvara, or Chenrezig (in Tibetan) the Holy Buddha of infinite and boundless universal Compassion.

Hope this helps. smile

Thank you for clarifying the age he was discovered. I thought he was a little older then that. I have been studying Tibetan Buddhism for about 6 months now. It is very complicated but I like the structure of it.

I would have no idea of how exactly to classify him...he is just a highly respected Boddhisattva and Religious leader...he was awarded the Nobel peace Prize back in the 80's for his tireless continued efforts to spread peace univerasally. He says his religion is kindness. If that's good enough for him, it's good enough for me....!! laugh

In my opinion and this is only my opinion, the His Holiness the Dali Lama is more comparable to Ghandi (excuse my spelling). He really isn't comparable to the Pope other then he is a great leader. The Pope upholds the laws, regulations and dogma of Catholic teachings. HH Dali Lama doesn't uphold any religious laws, he is seen the way as Buddha is seen, a great teacher of the ways of Buddha and he teaches Tibetan Buddhism which is one of many schools of Buddhism where as I believe the Pope is like the ruler of all Catholics. Does that make sense?
