Sorry, this is another guess, if David Byron isn't right. Do you use the coals to make a fire? That is my guess: used the coals to make fire! HAHAHAHA! I know that's right (no, probly not, but whatever)

I'm trying out the "Adventure" text game Lisa linked to. Got killed three times by a dwarf but scored about 70 points first. I wonder if you are meant to be able to deal with the dwarves somehow...

Bah!
Second try - got quickly killed 3 times by dwarf trying to swing the axe. Figured out eventually how to partially deal with it....

Third try 106 points. Lamp ran out while exploring the Maze. I don't see why you can't explore the maze without a lamp....

4th.. finished maze map. Lamp ran out again. 103 pts. Tried walking without lamp on a couple of times to save batteries. Not advised...

5th - 149 pts before lamp ran out again. Lamp is more of an issue than the dwarves now. Managed to escape the "nasty" maze. I suspect there's no point in fully exploring it.

6th - 148 (died with a few treasures on me). Seem to have mapped out most of it now. Not sure how to get the gold chain off the friendly bear.

Hey, use THROW AXE AT DWARF to kill the dwarf I just put a walkthrough up - I went through and played it again and it's amazing how quickly you begin to remember the old things. Those brain cells must've been pretty dusty though!

There are two mazes. One you can ignore - it has a new battery for the lamp, but you should be able to win the game on just one lamp. The other maze is where the pirate stores his treasure, so I'm afraid you'll have to explore that one

On the bear question, by 'friendly' does this mean you figured out how to get him to become friendly? If so, it's just that the chain is locked to the wall

David is right, you do indeed turn the coal into a diamond And once you get through Adventure, you definitely need to try Zork! I was actually going to hunt it down myself I used to have it on 5 1/4 but that's long gone ...

Question 20: in Secret of Monkey Island, how do you deal with the Killer Attack Poodles?

I figured out the axe thing after a while. Actually I got spare batteries and am now on turn 1121 (whereas without them its only up to about 350 turns) and oddly I don't remember having hassle from the dwarf in a long time.

I had no problem with the mazes. Mapped out the nasty maze completely. There are several ways to get to the center of the nasty maze. Probably the easiest to remember is (from the West end of the Long Hall),

S,S,S,S,S,S,S,S,S (you're there) then
out
D,D,D (you're back in the Long Hall).

But the easiest to remember of minimal length is probably,

S (enter maze)
U,U,S (you're there)
N,D,D,D

Since the extra batteries give you over 800 odd extra moves, the longer route seems ok.

Currently I'm trying to get the persian carpet from the dragon.

re. the mazes, I noticed the stalagtite drops you in at least two different rooms at random. With a map its easy to orientate yourself in the nice maze, and just walk to the chest and exit without even dropping 'bread crumbs'.

At least you _can_ drop bread crumbs in the Adventure mazes. Some games didn't let you! Now that's when things get difficult to map.
