Hello all! I bought a sewing machine for myself this past Xmas. I am bound and determined to make a scrub top for my work at the hospital. Easy right? Yeah, until I get to the v-neck and back collar (which isn't really a collar)

Can anyone recommend a good online sewing tutorial? I've done a cursory search and haven't found one yet.

Cindy

Hi Cindy,

Make a visit to your public library if you don't want to purchase a sewing instruction book. If you want to add some instruction books to your library, visit your local book store or Amazom.com. Just do a search on basic sewing instructiion books.

This is a link to some basic sewing instruction books on Amazon.

Here is another link to an article on sewing a V neckline:

Good luck and enjoy your project,

Make sure you marked your pieces as the pattern suggests. A crewneck (rounded) would have been easier for a beginner but you have moxie so I think you will get this fine. You want to make sure your marks match, the pattern I recently did for someone had circles which I marked with an x (sewers chalk or sewers marking pencil/pen there are alot of tool notions that help). My instructions were to join the collar band and then apply. My seam was in the front and at 2 matching angles so I had my top together and my neck band together. Placed the seam in the front centered right sides together (use your pins but do not sew over them!). Then I pressed the band and seam allowances the same upward direction away from the front, did a finish edge stitch around the outside edge of the band a zigzag stich works if you do not have an overcast stitch, turned the band down behind the seam allowances pinning flat. Then I stitched in the ditch or right along the joint of the band and shirt. This helped me to stitch straight instead of doing topstitching that might go crooked. czimm

Hi Cindy, Good luck learning to sew. By any chance is your
pattern from Simplicity Pattern company?? If so, you can
call the phone number on the envelope, and a helpful sewing
person will walk you through it!! Also, try the Simplicity
website, www.simplicity.com , and go to "classroom" for some
sewing helps. Hope this doesn't sound like a commercial!!
