I think that is a terrific idea! We can all sit around and make fun of the people whose kids never come to see them to take care of them in their old age. And then go play bocce ball or something.

I've been working on my curmudgen routine for years. Count me in! A friend and I have been joking for years that we will one day be the crazy cat ladies, but she's hoping to have kids. She'll have grandkids to deal with if she has it her way. I guess I'll have to be the crazy cat lady all by myself. Anyone wanna swing by in a few decades and help me rescue strays?

It is one my fantasies to have a communal type place when I'm old. That would be the best to do it with other childfree folks, though I guess by then that wouldn't matter. If someone had kids or grandkids, I wouldn't hold it against them, as long as their kids added, not detracted. In my fantasy we could all have our separate living quarters, and share the cost of a housekeeper, cook, and even nurse/butt wipe technician if needed. We could have dinners and movie nights, and play cards or whatever. I hope to learn a musical instrument with all my non-childraising time, so we could jam. Maybe we can stay in touch till then!
Only thing, I love animals, but couldn't handle living somewhere that smelled like cat pee. You cat ladies are going to have to stay up on that.

I can't handle nasty pee scented places, either. I'm a bit maniacal about keeping the box clean and having well trained pets. no worries, frieda!

Anyone wanna swing by in a few decades and help me rescue strays? Myrabeth... I love cats too. I'm 12 years younger than my husband, so I'm pretty sure that I'll wind up spending many years on my own. Rescuing stray cats (and having them spayed/neutered) sounds like a great way to contribute during my retirement. Thanks for the suggestion - I'll definitely keep it in mind.

Hey ladies,
I'm already starting to talk with a dear friend of mine (who has kids and lives in Altnata) and my brother (with whom I'm close; he lives in Miami) about buying a big old house in Asheville NC and retiring there. We could rent out the upper floor to a caretaker (for the property). Later, we might need more services; pooling our resources to hire a gardener, a cook, a nurse, etc.
I posted recently about a group of Stanford profs who, upon retiring, did something similar. Apparently the only problem was who gets one's share in the property after a CF person passes on. I figure my attorney brother (who specializes in Wills & Trusts) could figure that out...he's only 42. 8^)
I'm entirely serious...we're already beginning to think about this, in our early 40s. My grandparents (and now my parents, from whom I'm estranged) all had/have lousy lives as they aged, largely due to their own lack of insight or acceptance that one needs to be more of an "ant" and less of a "butterfly" as one ages (i.e., take care of the logistical stuff first...get your ducks in a row...then the "fun" part of your life will have a better chance of going well).

Elise, I think that is a great idea! I have a similar thought for when I get older--kind of a time share/commune. In our younger years, we could use the property as a vacation place--if several couples/friends/relatives go in on it, expenses would be minimal. Then upon retirement we live in the property (maybe a 4-plex) and help eachother out. From the time i turned 18 I have lived far away from my family and am used to building my own family wherever i am living. I see no reason why we cannot do this in retirement years!

I think I'm already there............!! I think I told you about the person who called the police on me because I was out in my front yard in a house coat screaming at all the cars going by? (I was actually fully dressed saying, please don't block my driveway.) Yes, the parents at the school next door think I'm a crazy psycho [censored].
