My neighbor was shocked that I didn't drive to work every day like she does. Her office is a 15 min walk from our condo complex, mine is a little less than 10. When I ski at Taos Ski Valley, I ride the bus from the town of Taos which saves 40 miles of driving. The round trip fare is $1 and my little Suzuki can't get there for less than $1 even though it gets 30 mpg. Again some people expressed shock that I didn't drive straight to the ski area like they did.

I wish more people used alternative, greener means of travel instead of hopping in their cars for the shortest of trips. My boyfriend and I managed without a car quite happily for years - we used trains to commute to work, and we walked to the station (a 25 minute walk). Eventually, my boyfriend's office moved out of London and the train was no longer a viable option, so he had to get a car. We still walk/use public transport when we can though. As for me, I'm a complete anomaly - I don't even own a driving licence.
I think part of the problem, here in the UK at least, is the prohibitive cost, and overcrowding, of public transport - it's no wonder some people prefer to use their cars rather than start their day in packed-sardine style...
