I recently posted a notice about my societies dying. Still not sure of the cause. But I had one society sitting on eggs which were hatching the day her mate died. I know she had 3 to hatch. But sadly 2 were found at the bottom of the cage, very small. And found the last one dead in the nest, somewhat large, but unfeathered. Are societies hard to breed and raise? I thought they would be as easy as zebras. I've lost 2 society nests now. I have to think that losing her mate caused her babies to die, with nobody to help her.
We also have a cockatiel that has bonded to my 12 year old son, and won't have much to do with me. I'll tell more about him later.
And would love to tell you all how I acquired my aviary and lots of finches.
They are very important in my and my sons lives. Don't know what we did before we got them.
And we may be aquiring a mollucan (sp) pink cockatoo close to Christmas. $900 including cage. I think that is a very fair price.
I'm so happy to have found this forum.
Thank you!

Generally speaking, most society finches are so easy to breed that you cannot stop them. I have even known folks whose societies have nested in millet on the cage/aviary floor! All new parents can have problems in the beginning of parenthood. Your finch losing her mate is another stressor for her. If you could describe your cage size, type of feed, millet, calcium source(s), and any supplements you use - I can probably be more helpful. There is a finch group on Yahoo that I have found to be informative and it relates well to beginners and advanced finch-keepers and breeders: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/All_About_Finches/

Unfortunately, it doesn't surprise me that the babies didn't make it, with only one parent to look after them. Societies are normally quite easy to raise though and hopefully you won't have any more problems with the ones you have left.

I'd love to hear about your son's Cockatiel as well as your story on acquiring your aviary.

Good luck on the M2. I hope you're done a lot of research on these birds as they are the most frequently re-homed birds there are. Have you ever heard a Moluccan scream?
