part of the reason for my wanting join was the usefulness of the articles i had read so far. i hadnt gotten to the one on finrot yet. i like the KISS idea at this point i have stopped using melafix and am only using the maracyn-2 for three more days. ill let you know what i think of it- hope it works quick- my blue/red male has lost more than half his tail. i havent figured out names yet for my fish, hopefully that will come soon.

Most important thing is clean clean water Ks...by the way...welcome! <img src="/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I have had my share of finrot issues, especially in one of my nicest little guys. I finally resorted to a drastic measure, which I wont get into here..but it seems to have worked...but before doing what I did I would try all the other options first.
Try puting him in a 16 oz. size clear plastic bowl..like the ones the betta come in in Walmart...and change his water every day adding whatever meds you are using along with some aquarium salt. I used up alot of bettafix doing this once because I had to add whatever had been added up to that point to each consecutive water change. I used two seperate bowls so that I could rinse and wipe out the one I took him out of. I have him floating in a heated 10 gallon divided tank so I float the new bowl in the tank after I clean it all out and add the fresh water...so the next day all I have to do is scoop him into the clean bowl, then get the dirty one ready for him for the next day.
Anyway...good luck with that finrot and let us know how it goes! Been there..done THAT...and am sure I will again!

just as an update is does look like everyone is getting better, is it typically a slow process to grow the tail back? anyway they seem to be getting better and are no worse for wear from the medication. i used maracyn two diluted in R.O. water by parts so i could treat small tanks. hope all is well with everyone else and thank you for all the help.

kscarlet,
Yes, it can take them a long time to grow back their fins. As long as you can see the new growth, they're doing fine.

Hi,
I just joined the forum and wanted to introduce myself. I purchased my Betta whom I dubbed "Kyosai" about a month ago and he's a great guy. So far he has added much more warmth to my work place. Late last week I noticed that Kyosai had the beginings of fin rot, so we are treating that and hopefully I will see some sort of progress soon.
I've read many of the back posts on here as well as articles and they have been extremly helpful in diagnosing my friend and hopefully treating him as well. Thanks again for all your helpful posts and advice!
I'm thinking with sand here...
