A friend of mine gave me tons of yarn and needles that used to be his mom's. She passed away a couple months back. In going thru some bags today (there were alot of bags of yarn and unfinished projects) I came across these 2 things. The tops twist which cause the metal spikey things to go in or come out of the bottom. Does anyone know what they are and how I use them.

Also oin a side note, in another bag was a K-tel knitter, which from what I googled is a handy dandy way to knit with one needle. Has anyone ever used one?

They are used to make little woven motifs or flowers, they have various names. You wind wool around the little metal teeth and sew around the middle then you release the motif/flower by twisting the handle to make the teeth disapear. If you were to type flower loom into your browser you will probably get more info. The K tel knitter is it blue plastic with a red piece on it? if so i have one here and i know there is a booklet that goes with it to tell you how to use it but i haven't got it. I honestly find Tunisian crochet easier to do than to use that thing.

They are flower looms (also known as Daisy Looms), they make little yarn motifs that can be attached to make larger items. I've never used one, but these look like really nice ones.

You can find instructions (and instructions to make your own) on Small Looms page of Sarah Bradberry's Knitting and site. It even includes two crochet and flower loom patterns.

Thanks for posting this, I've always wanted to play with one of these and now I think I will!

yes that is exactly what it is. I haven't found a booklet to go with it yet but I did find a couple webpages telling me how to use it. I just don't know if how it's used can be translated to other patterns I have.
