I am a beginner and I can't get the gauge right. The pattern says that the gauge should be: 12 dc & 11 sp = 6 inches with a K hook. Two strings held together.
I tried a K hook and J hook, I hook. I get 10 dc and 9 sp = 6 inches. Why can't I get the right gauge. Am I suppose to go to a bigger hook and smaller? Very confusing for me.
Thanks for your help.

Well New Frustrated Crocheter !!!

[( Looks like you Crochet Very Loosely. )]

Most patterns suggest a needle size for the gauge and yarn type.
But >>>
It depends what you are making and how loose or tight you sew, and the type of Yarn.

Yes , > You could and should try different size needles.
It is your work and you are the creator.

Now for clothing , you will want to get as close to the suggested sizing .

MamaGriz -

I've been crocheting for over 20 years (although I'd really say I'm still a beginner, I crochet when I want something crocheted and not usually just for the fun of it) and I still have trouble with getting anywhere close to the gauge I want in any kind of timely manner. Luckily, there are an awful lot of things where either it doesn't matter or you can do whatever looks good to you.

As a beginner, making those gauge swatches is really good practice though - by the time you get to your project you have the pattern down pat.

Try using a smaller hook to obtain gauge.
Smaller hooks gives you more stitches per inch
Larger hooks gives you less stitches per inch
Hope this helps a little.
