Who the hell cares about these people? Is what I want to know. I think its really sad that people spend thier time analyzing the love lives and family lives of celebrities

This ties back to what I've said before about seeing A Baby Story on TLC about the family that had something like 5 kids and were doing invitro because they "so desperately" wanted more. It makes me sick.

It's not that we care so much about them, but it was a news story and we were discussing it, and the purpose of my posting it here was not to analyze celebrities lives, but to point out something that was said in the course of that conversation.

End of story.

I wasn't trying to fault you, commoncents...it's just an indictment, in general, of what passes for "news" these days. I think we'd all be a bit better off if we didn't know how Jennifer Aniston's latest pap smear went...show biz was a lot more fun and glamourous when the focus was on the creative content and the story lines...

Oh no Bonsai, I was responding to TBunny when she asked "why do you care?" I lead a very active life and hardly sit around discussing the comings and goings of the rich and famous, however, a co-worker and I happened to be discussing Jolie because she was in the news this morning because of her decision to adopt another child. I would not have referened it at all, but I wanted to point out to the board how the word Selfish is banddied around and how preplexed I am at it's constant use in regards to CF people.

I agree with you what passes as news does "suck" but I think that two people can have a conversation in passing regarding someone in the news without being accused of being vested in others lives.

Interesting. I never understood the "not having kids is selfish" theory. Like others here have said, how can NOT wanting something be considered selfish?

I will also say Jolie and Pitt may have very selfish motives for all of their charity. It seems to keep them in the news much, much more than those who aren't doing such benevolent acts. I'm not saying this is the only reason they continue to adopt, but I'm sure that they find it to be a big perk. Otherwise, why be so public about it?

I, for one, am not impressed.

My guess is that those two have a lot of help. If I could afford nannies, cooks, etc. I'd be happy to adopt numerous children from the third world. It is much different for those of us with 9-5 jobs barely making ends meet. We would work a long day and then BAM! four kids to deal with. Much different for those two I'm sure....

Im really sorry commoncents because when I looked at my post it did look like I was criticising you but I was really not meaning too. My point was why are the newspaper and the press reporting thhis stuff. I posted in the past about how annoyed I was with the constant baby celebrity stories, the reason it annoys me is it is not news. No one knows why anyone else does anything and you rarely understand hte innerworkings of close friends and families marriages, never mind celebrities. Not to point out that these people have a right to privacy. As for Jolie and Pitt adopting I think it is wonderful as it may encourage other people who want children to adopt and provide needy children with homes rather then having thier own children. Also I do think they truly put their money where their mouth is and use lots of it for charity. The media is obsessed with them but at least they put a positive spin on it and use it for charity. I know that they have sold photos and given money to charity in the past which I think is a good thing, as people would get the photos anyway. Still I think it is very sad that our society is so focused on the lives celebrites and I think its a way for news media to distract from the real issues.

Ingilbert's quote: "It is selfish because you are denying your parents and siblings their right to be grandparents, aunts, and uncles".

Are you serious or sarcastic? Parents/siblings don't have any rights. Where is my right to ask to never be born? Parents need to realize their kid is going to grow up and make their own decisions in life. Just because your parents want grandkids should have no part in your decision making process about something as huge as bringing another life into this world.

I don't know why America is obsessed with celebs. Almost all of them have no business being rolemodels to society. (I say that because everyday folks look up to that lifestyle wishing they had it). Hardly any celebs are decent/moral. They'll do anything for that fat paycheck which is disgusting and society sees nothing wrong with that. I could never feel sorry for any celebrity.

"Because...they want to have their own children, their own genes, carry on their own name. Parenting is not about selflessness or charity or generosity to the world --- and never was,

Which is totally OK, but --- calling us selfish? Puh-leeez.

Elise"

I totally agree. People who choose not to have kids aren't selfish at all compared to many parents. Over the weekend I read the most disturbing essay in the NY Times (here is the link - NY Times Essay) by a woman who underwent fertility treatment and became pregnant with triplets. Against her doctor's advice to abort one of the fetuses for the sake of her own & the babies safety, she decided to carry all three. After a harrowing pregnancy and all three babies suffering from major health complications, she writes about how happy she is with her choice. She does mention, at the very end of the essay, that she feels a little bad about drain on society caused by her $1 million (yes, $1,000,000!) hospital bill that was fully covered by medicaid & her insurance company.
