Hey I have had my betta for almost a year now. He has had ich before and has cleared up fine. But now he has fin rot. I first thought the light red was the color at the ends of his fins due to his mixture of color but I was wrong frown Now his back fin is all torn up and is almost half the original size. He lives in a one gallon tank with a light and the temp stays around 80.I do a 50% water change every week then do a full change a week later. He has been fighting fin rot for about a week now. I am currently treating him in a smaller tank while Im cleaning his other one. Im using BettaFix and also keep aquarium salt in his tank. He hasnt lost his color or appetite. Im just so worried about him. Im away from college and have no car if I have to go get more meds for him. Any more ideas?

Have you treated the tank with an antibiotic tablet? They are available from most pet stores. I had a Betta that had fin rot and I used Tetracycline tablets that I got from the pet store and it cleared up quite nicely. Good Luck!

I think you are doing the best you can at the moment. If the other meds you have tried do not work I recomend Mardel's TriSulfa. It is available at any pet store, walmart and meijer. Your water does seem to hold a higher temperature than normally recomended but you know what works best for your individual beta - since they are all different. :)I would also suggest that you not turn on your tank light in case you have used it in the past. It would not have been contributing to the fin rot but certainly is uncomfortable for a beta.

Hope your btea gets better.

Hi, What a beautiful blue color he is! Wow! Magnificant! I'd say for a one gallon tank - the water could be changed completely in this circumstance even more often - like every 3 days if he still has fin rot. Betta fix is pretty good for fin rot usually if that's what he really has. Yes, the 80 degree water temperature is usually used more often during sickness and treatment of the fish in a hospital tank. Keeping the water at a slightly warmer temp like that also can cause bacteria to grow more rapidly and thus require full water changes more often. They are tropical and so they do like it warm, though. If you can't get to a petstore, can you order something online and have it mailed to you overnight, maybe - or have a friend or a family member who is near a petstore go there for you or give you a ride there or something like that, maybe? You know, I mean, if it's an emergency. I really hope your little sweetie is doing better.
