ok so as alot of use might no i have been trying to breed my tiels for some time now and they have had 1 clutch but ended up abondening them after a night scare. ok so after alot of advice from people i was told to remove the box and give it back to them at a later day so i guess it has probably been about 1mnth now since i removed the box (had to put the box back in because we are having a renovation and there is stuff everywere no room to put nothing) now i put the box in yesterday and today i saw the male looking through the entrance of the box not going in just looking in there for maybe about 2-3min and putting 1 foot up about to go in then putting it back down, now he did this with both boxes so after i saw him stop looking i walked off, then when i walked back again i saw them mating now the weird thing is when the box was in the last time they would always mate but never lay so once the box was removed they stoped mating but now that i have put the box back in the next day they are already mating why would they do this???? they are in the aviary outside and this time of year isnt the right time for eggs breeding is it? but why do you tihnk that they mated the next day once i put the box back but when it wasnt in they never mate (i am probably about 95% sure that they never did once the box was out becuase they only ever seem to mate on the top of that box never anywere else) yes so really my question is why do you think they mate only when that box is in but never lay eggs?????

It would be wonderful if we could provide answers for you Philip - but so far I don't know of a way to read our bird's minds. smile My guess is that they want to mate on a flat surface, so that is why the do it on top of the box.

If it is cold where you are, I would probably block the hole in the nestbox so they don't start laying eggs though.

OK - so its summer there. I sure miss summer! smile

Well - summer is breeding season here in Canada, but I'm not sure if that is the breeding season in Australia. Do you have a rainy season? Is it the spring that most breeding happens there.

Birds always start breeding in the spring here, but if they have a 2nd clutch, that will be in the summer.

I've been watching the africam cameras in Africa and this is getting towards the end of their summer rainy season and winter is their dry season.

Both Africa and Australia are on the top of my list of places I'd love to visit and learn more about.
