I'm planning to do an article about funny place names in England. Since nobody responded to my plea in the newsletter, I'm posting this here for anyone to respond to.

Give me some funny English place names that you know. Gold star for you if you can tell me the origins of the name.

Also, let me know if you're comfortable with me quoting you in the article. I may PM you for your full name and location.

The funnier, the better. But let's keep this clean, folks! I am aware that there are some rather vulgar sounding place names out there!

One of my favorites was Cowbit (actually pronounced "Cubbitt"). Admittedly, we were slap-happy on the drive from Yorkshire back to London, and it just struck us funny. We even parked the car and took a photo by the town sign!

That wasn't as good as the town of Eye, though!

Both are near Peterborough.

You just reminded me...we drove past some place in Yorkshire...Goat-something. I can't remember the name of the town, but we laughed about it a lot.

Ahhhh...what was it? It was near the North York Moors. This is probably going to bug me now until I can remember it.

Spittal! I love it!

I believe Three Holes was actually one of those towns listed in my friend's book of naughty place names.

Since I'm starting work on the article about this, I came across this page. It's been fun doing research on some of these names.
